Question for someone who has been down this road. I am considering buying a new car, but am shopping dealerships out of Louisiana. ( ie Houston, Birmingham, and Mobile area)

I am guessing I would be paying tax twice - - once at purchase is foreign state and once in Louisiana upon registering vehicle. Is that how this works? IF so, what is the process?

Any rule of thumb on how much one would have to save to make any extra expense associated with an out of state purchase worthwhile?

No.. I bought a used truck used in TX about 6 years ago. I paid for it, no TX taxes. When I got back to LA I took the title to the DMV and registered it and paid taxes then. I think if you're buying new an out of state dealership can handle all LA TTL for you.

Pay taxes of state you are registering in. Live in TX, bought last new car in VA. Paid TX taxes.

LA DoR PDF

quote:

A credit against the 4.45 percent state sales tax will be granted to residents who paid a similar tax on the purchase of the motor vehicle in the other state if that state allows a credit for taxes paid in Louisiana. A credit cannot be allowed for taxes paid in a foreign country.

No, you only pay taxes on the vehicle for the location it is registered in

I just did this for a truck. I wanted a really specific set of options and didn't feel like waiting for a custom order. Ended up finding a dealership in San Antonio (I'm in SW LA). Did the whole deal in 2-3 phone calls. Flew in one evening from Lake Charles and they had my salesperson pick me up from my hotel the next morning. I was at the dealership no more than 10 minutes for paperwork and was on the road. No TX taxes, they work directly with LA. Received my LA license plate in the mail yesterday.

(Cavender Chevrolet was great if you are shopping for a chevy)
