USAA customer. Have been for 7 plus years. No complaints. But I am interested in learning if they are still competitive from a pricing standpoint.

Ascension Parish - Louisiana

Section I - Coverages and Amounts of Insurance

Dwelling $300K
Other Structures $150K
Personal Property Protection $150K
Loss of Use Protection $60K

Section II - Coverages and Limits of Liability

Personal Liability - Each Occurrence $500K
Medical Payments to Others $5K

Deductibles (Applies to Section I Coverages Only)

Wind and Hail $6K (2%)
All Other Perils $6K (2%)

Total Premium Policy

$1,874.80

I am supposedly receiving credits and discounts for:

- Auto and Home Combination Discount
- Claims Free Discount
- Home Age Discount
- Protective Device Discount
- Roof Age Discount

For those who are smarter than me at this, is it worth my time (and money) to shop what I currently have? Or do you believe this is a fair price for the amount of coverage that I have?

The companies, based upon research here, that I would consider for a quote are Access Home, UPC, Maison, ASI, Gulfstream, Grovera and Lexington.

Would an independent broker be able to get me a quote for the majority of these companies? FICO scores are in the 800s.

Edited to Add:

I also have Valuable Personal Property insurance through USAA but I don't believe I am receiving a credit and/or discount with this. I pay $554.00 annually for:

1 a. Jewelry - Blanket Coverage $7K
1 b. Jewelry - Scheduled Coverage $30,000

You can likely find something less expensive but probably not by much. You would be leaving one of the most reputable companies out there for a takeout company, only to save $200-300/year.

And you need to look at it as a package, when you move the home, the auto will go up. So you’d have to shop both and be able to save on both.

Personally, i don’t know if I’d shop it. I doesn’t hurt to shop, but for me I wouldn’t leave USAA to save $200/year and have a Progressive/UPC package.

That has been the same mentality I have had for a while now as USAA is a great company to have for insurance.

I should have clarified in my original post that while pricing is important, it isn't necessarily the deciding factor ... unless another company can offer the same or better coverage for considerably less (when all bundled together), i.e. 25 percent or more in savings.

USAA is worth the premium. I'm partial owner in a restoration company and USAA ALWAYS breaks out the checkbook for homeowners. By far the best insurance company to have in your corner.

Allstate and State Farm are the worst.

USAA customer.
Only military, ex-military and their families can purchase USAA, correct?

I'm also in Ascension Parish and have very similar coverages with Liberty Mutual for half the price ($918/yr). This is my second straight year with them. Last year it was $884.

That is a significant difference. Do you have anything else bundled with them?

I pay $266/yr to State Farm for a personal articles policy covering my wife’s ring ($30k) and my watches ($10k). This is the only biz I do with SF.

Also I have MetLife on my house - similar coverage to you on that, too - for $914/yr in Caddo parish. I used a brokerage to find that.

I think it may be worth at least a call to an independent broker this week.

Can anyone recommend a good insurance broker firm and/or person in Baton Rouge / Ascension?

Brand new Home? That’s a very low rate.

Will, I’d check out Insurance Network in BR or Bourg in Prairieville. I think they have all the contracts. Been a few years since I’ve been in the independent Insurance side though

I have Maison, they paid for a new roof on my old house one year after purchase. No complaints so far and very low deductible.

Yes, I also have auto insurance with them on 2 cars (full coverage). Both are 2011 model vehicles.

I learned today that Met Life doesn't write homeowners policies in Ascension Parish.
