We can get a new Nissan Rogue Sport for the same price as a used Honda HR-V ... shopping for our daughter who is currently driving grannys-then moms-then brothers-now her Expedition with 199,800 miles on it. She's a junior in high school and planning to go to college out of state roughly 7 hours away so we want her to have a reliable, safe vehicle.

Nissan has a lifetime powertrain warranty --- Honda (if certified) has the remainder of the 100,000 powertrain warranty.

Our intention was never new -- We've also considered other used options but for the price, they come with a good number of miles and less warranty. We've owned Hondas, Toyotas, Fords and haven't really ever had any issues and we keep cars for pretty much ever (we have a 1999 Ford F250 with 250k still rolling for farm use!)

Just don't know much about Nissan -- anyone with any general thoughts??

Nissan does not come with a lifetime powertrain warranty (that is dealership only offer, you have to do all services there, Royal never told me that until they voided it due to lack of service done there, even though i did it at a Nissan dealership). So just so you know, and since she is going out of state, doubt she will come back to do all her services.

Autotrader's Advice
The Rogue Sport will cost you more money should you equip it equally to an HR-V. You'll also spend about $100 extra on gas every year, according to EPA estimates. However, it's generally the superior vehicle. It has comparable interior space while feeling bigger and more substantial behind the wheel. There's also something to be said for its superior safety credentials, stronger engine and easier-to-use tech. It should be noted, though, that the Honda HR-V is currently the best-selling subcompact SUV on the market.

So if you're getting the Rogue Sport new cheaper than a used HV-R, I'd lean towards that on the value side.

Yes we asked about that. Lifetime power train is through dealership. And they did tell us (when I asked) about work done elsewhere --- said first two years would have to be at purchase dealership.

That's my thought as well --- it's the entry model (base) as she doesn't need sunroof and heated seats lol. The one thing it doesn't have that her expedition does is auto-on headlights. It's crazy I think that all cars don't have that. Does have auto off.

I have a Honda and don't care much for the cvt but don't think she'd notice.

Going to try to expand my search zone as well. Was trying to stay near home for ease of purchase. Crazy I know.

How used is the Honda?

Honda’s hold their value way better than Nissan. My experience anyway. My wife has a two year old rouge that the bottom fell out of as far as value. Also, the a/c compressor went out around 37k miles. Luckily we had extended warranty.

I’d go w the Honda if it is only 1-2 years old.

What about a Toyota C-HR, Corolla iM or Rav4?

The Mrs. had an Altima when we first met. Left a really bad taste in my mouth for Nissan. Was a terribly built car and constant trouble. Nissans are also fairly well known for poor resale, but from the sounds of things that won't be an issue for you guys.

CVTs are trash pretty much all around.

If the price is comparable, I would go with the Rogue.

Interesting, but not unexpected. I bought a new Hyundai and also had the lifetime powertrain warranty, but there was no such condition on it (which is good, because I bought it 2 hours away). As long as I complete all scheduled maintenance, I'm good. Doesn't even have to be a Hyundai dealer, but if it isn't, the onus is on me to maintain those records.

People rag on the Nissan CVT, but my experience has been great. I drove the wheels off an Altima and only traded it because I quite commuting and wanted a pickup again and went with a Nissan there too. Wife drives a Murano and I think it is a fantastic car. That said, buying a used Honda is hardly ever a bad decision.

If you are financing, you might want to consider the interest rate on Used vs. New since used rates are typically a bit higher.
