I'm up 20% YTD on my 401K. Should I go all cash until next year, January 2020?

One side of me says, "stop trying to time the market".
Other side says "Middle East getting hot, few folks ever complained about 20% ".

Definitely don't do this.
Now if your balance is now off your target allocation, feel free to rebalance. If your personal strategy involves a low percentage allocation to a money market fund, then the rebalance will take care of your "profit taking."

That's just generic advice, for more specific numbers you'd have to provide more information like age, retirement horizon etc

What do you have it in that you are up 20%?

There is nothing wrong with declaring victory and taking some profits, especially in a 401k where it won't create a taxable event. But what you are describing is an attempt at market timing that just doesn't make sense.

This exactly. Just rebalance. Buy some lower volatility equities maybe. No reason to go nuts and all cash.
