Hmmm, double barrel LSU. Law review? Federal clerkship? Years working so far?

Definitely the best route in this legal market, IMO.

The ones in La. are marginal, at best.

Hopefully, it's different in other areas.

I haven't had to use one (yet), but I think in larger markets where there is much greater associate attrition the headhunters are better.

If this is really the case, you should.

What's stopping you?

Although, I know your current salary is none of my business, I think you breached the subject earlier, and from what I recall, I don't think you are correct in this.

Also, if you start in the fall, you typically get bumped up a paygrade (about $10,000) at the first of January. At least that's how it used to be.

You sure you looked into this closely?

Plus the benefits in looking for a job later are invaluable.

Yep. Typically practicing attorneys who go to clerk earn quite a bit more than new law grads doing the same.

Absolutely. Can't really put a price on the experience, connections, and prestige from the clerkship.

not in terms of bumps in pay, etc, but i have an idea of what the salaries are from people. can't get into it really

Say what?

If you mean permanent clerks, they make more just by virtue of their years with the federal government.

All clerks start at the same GS level, otherwise. There's no recognized distinction for "head" clerks though.

ideally, i'd hope 1 year of litigation would be worth more than 1 year clerking. somehow i doubt that's the case

You are right, that is not the case with respect to most law firms.

How are you so sure about this? I got a lot of "thank you for your interest" letters, and I think I had better grades than you.

I was a bit curious about that, myself.

Given the certainy with which he stated it, I was assuming some sort of "inside" connection.

Me too. Hell, that'll be pretty much what it takes for anyone to get a clerkship this coming year.
