Insurance Policy for Cancer, Heart Attack or Stroke?

I have standard health insurance through my employer but am contemplating getting a policy for cancer. I am adopted so I don’t have any family history as such. What should I be looking at for a plan and what should I be avoiding? Anyone have a policy or provider they can recommend?

Those catastrophic illness policies are a rip-off. Save your money.

The biggest provider in the world is Aflac
The other main compeitors I want to say are Colonial, All State and I think Liberty?

I don't know if they are good or not. Ive never read the policies or seen the premiums.
I do have 2 acquaintances who swear by the cancer policies. The odds are rare, but they felt like they were taken well care of. And they each felt like they would not have been OK without them.
That is probably the best "litmus test".
Could you be OK without it?
The people who struggle the most with bills are the people who benefit the most with good coverages.

I had one of those. Never had to use it. It would have paid a lump sum of $20,000.

I had quadruple bypass surgery several years ago and thought for sure I would collect from AFLAC for my three days in the hospital. Whoops, bypass surgery is not covered. Read the fine print.

What kind of policy did you have? A quick Google search says they cover bypass surgery

Get a gene test done first to see if you carry the cancer gene. My wife just had it done and insurance considers it preventative and covers 100%.
Then decide from there if you need insurance

Many policies may have a waiting period for prior conditions. 90 days, 1 or 3 years depending upon the type of condition.

As I recall, the coverage didn't kick in until after the third day of hospitalization and I was in and out of the hospital in three days.

Critical illness is normally concentrated on heart attacks, invasive cancer and strokes. They normally pay a lump sum and are pretty affordable, depending on your age. Most people who own them outside work don’t have stand alone policies but have them as riders attached to life insurance policies. The amount is usually a percentage of the face value of the life insurance policy. I think Mutual of Omaha has a good product. I would probably want to make sure that more than cancer is included and that it also covers things like heart attacks, strokes, organ transplants, etc. If cancer runs in your immediate family you may be declined as too high risk.
