Where’s the best place to try and sell? Would a retail store give you fair value?

They consider full value 15% of retail... used jewelry is a hard sell unless it is something truly unique or has a designer following.

Thanks. Guess it’ll sit in a drawer forever.

Do you not have kids or nieces or nephews you could give it to?

I would look for markings and to see if anything is designer. My grandma bought tons of jewelry with money she didn't have... lots of it was designer that actually fetched a good price. The regular stuff even though it was real gold, decent diamonds, rubies, saphires etc and the custom stuff wasn't worth selling. She had some ladybug broach that went for some good money because of who made it.

This. Jewelry serves as excellent heirlooms because of how small it tends to be. Hold the pieces until the kids are old enough to value it and then give it to them. If you happen to have a picture of the person wearing it (which is going to become more and more common for people as time moves forward), all the better and include that when you give it to them.

if it's a lot, melt it and sell it as cubes, will get more.

Is it enough to shop around? Find a small jeweler who will buy it. If it is a nice piece, they will resell it, and pay you for the piece. If it isn’t a piece that they think could be resold, there is value in the gold/silver/titanium/stones.
My wife works for a jeweler doing exactly this…she can’t help you, we are in TX…but I guarantee that you can find someone to sell it to in a private sale if you don’t want to keep it in a drawer somewhere.
Gold is high right now, little pieces can add up. You aren’t going to get full spot price, they have to be able to make money on it, but all of them will give you a different percentage. Shop around and find the best deal for yourself.

Insure it based on "appraised value". Wear it while throwing caution to the wind. Like go water skiing decked out in it. Lose it and collect?
. I'm not advocating for insurance fraud. Just insurance carelessness.
