Diamnonds = not even rare. You're paying big bucks as a result of a marketing ploy

Women on getting big diamond rings = to show off to other women and brag about their sexual market values.

Man buying the ring = busting his balls for the benefit of the jewelry retailer.

Why not save the money for your kids education or pay off the house?

Diamonds are pretty, but dumb. Make sure she understands what you're thinking of buying and actually wants it. Plenty of women (myself included) forgo engagement rocks and are happy with simple bands. Would she rather have a two-week trip to (insert destination) than an engagement ring? Or flight lessons, or a joint savings account with equivalent cash that represents the start on a house downpayment?

Life doesn't have to follow the hackneyed script followed by all the other sheep. Figure out what makes you both happy and do that.

Come on guys. Not everything is about the investment/future/sound economic move. Some women like the idea of having a nice diamond ring for the tradition of it and to have a nice thing to show off and make them be proud. And as a husband I was able to provide that without putting a financial strain on myself so it made me happy. Not everything that cost money that has no use has to be "the devil". I feel like the money talk board is turning into this with anything besides spending money of stocks/retirement:

I am as frugal as they come. Personal finance is a bit of an obsession of mine. I feel like sometimes people get too involved with saving/investing that they forget why they started it in the first place. My main priority with my money is to give myself and my family a happy and comfortable lifestyle. If spending 5k on an overpriced rock is something that will make my future wife happy for the next 60+ years then it's worth it to me.

The same can be said for any large purchase. As long as you save for it and keep yourself out of a financial hole, I see no issue with it.

So you're saying women before DeBeers were not proud? And you need a diamond to be proud?

If you believe that you need you give a diamond to make your wife "feel good", then you are filling your inadequacies as a man with a shiny rock.

Here's the truth. Women wants masculine men. They may say other wise, but deep down inside it's what they want.

Now, I didn't post that diamonds were the devil, just that I thought they were dumb. I said ask her--find out what she wants--don't assume and jump to a grand gesture. Plenty of women find certain styles and settings difficult to wear because of jobs (nurse, chef/cook, personal trainer, etc) or certain hobbies/activities. You don't want to saddle her with a big fat diamond that will go un- or under-appreciated.

But hey, if it makes her happy and it makes you happy, buy it. Jewelry can always be liquidated, passed on to the grandkids, or reset in different styles or items...

No, not for many, many years. And clever is a bit demeaning...I mean, my cat is termed clever because she figured out how to use the electric cat flap.

don't forget help her with the dishes, mop the floor, and do the laundry. They say a man who helps with the chores gets more sex

Granted I only browsed for 5 minutes, but that place looks like a rip-off. If you're shopping at the right places, you can get a much better (or less shitty) deal new.

Recently got a Chase Freedom but if I could figure out a way to spend $4000 in three months I definitely would go with the Sapphire Preferred card.

Also, a bachelor party fantasy football draft next season needs to happen.

A nice engamement ring makes her happy. I more than had the finacial means to do so without harming my savings and retirement goals. So I did so. To call that "beta" makes me think you are pretty young. Let me guess 16?

Okay. I don't know where else you can buy a 1 karat excellent cut diamond for $3200. Use 5 minutes and find me that anywhere.
