This post is a dear diary post. You were warned!

The company I work for is about to do a major RIF with me included and I am honestly happy about it. I am 40 years old, wife, kids, new home with no other job prospects and it feels pretty good. I work in IT Sales at a Director level position and I look forward to less stressful days and less bullshite. For instance I sat in a meeting today where I was beat up for wanting to include profit margin in a consulting proposal. The powers that be just couldn't understand that you can't sustain a company if all of your proposals are at -150% margin. Hahahahaha. I guess we know the reason a major RIF is happening!

I see the writing on the wall and I couldn't care less. I am not really motivated to look for another job in my field either.

I may be having a midlife crisis but for some reason I am not stressed and look forward to being unemployed.

Who knows but at a minimum one months severance based upon my original employment agreement.

I have been doing some startup advisory lately on my own and man that's fun. The energy these young entrepreneurs have makes me feel alive again.

I'm on my phone and cant see where you live in Texas - how do you feel about consulting?

We're always hiring but you may be on the road M-Th.

Larry, I'm in Dallas. Don't mind consulting at all but it depends on what it is. At the very least I am happy to chat.

One month severance with nothing lined up. So... I assume you are going to blow through a bunch of your emergency-fund? Or, do you think you will find a new job rather quickly?

Fine and dandy for now but reality will set in during the middle of your severance. Eventually you will Need a plan B & C to take care of the family.

No it means I can retire right now comfortably but we also have two years of emergency funds saved up. My original post was to be cathartic for myself. Had a stressful day and needed somewhere to vent. Was on the train so I couldn't yell at strangers so this place was next best thing.

Probably should get this thread deleted since it was a pointless post by myself.

So you can retire comfortably at 40, have 2yrs of emergency funds but waited to get laid off from a job you seem to hate with a passion?????

My company just RIF a few jobs in my area and they all got 2 weeks pay for every year of service. One guy had ~25 years. I was upset for him until I found that out.

There's usually a limit on # of weeks they'll pay out. My company (a Fortune 100) has a max, I think it's 10 weeks but could be a little longer.
