If you read black swan and follow Taleb's work - a must read...

You’ve missed me. You almost certainly don’t know that, but you have. And the reason you don’t know is, first, because you’re almost certainly a schmuck who doesn’t get probability theory – and, second, because you don’t have skin in the game. Me, I always have skin in the game. That’s what makes me special. That’s why I made millions as a financial trader. That’s why I’m so much cleverer than everyone else. If you take just one thing away from this book, make it this: Big Nick knows best and is doing you a favour by writing it.

He used “cleverer” because he is mocking someone who thinks very highly of himself.

I'm not a fan of Taleb's arrogance and confrontational approach, but his views and work are too credible to ignore. I think his "Skin in the Game" idea gets taken to the exteme by his followers, and by Taleb himself, but I think it's very applicable to the politicians, virtue-signalers, etc. who are advocating for some idea, and demonizing others who don't support it, without actually risking anything themselves.

At first he was guy that wrote a great book and made us rethink risk. Then he got on twitter and started to come across as an arrogant douche with a chip on his shoulder. Fine. Then he cozied up to cernovich and basically flushed his credibility.

And he is no better when it comes to his anti-GMO stance
He is out there fear mongering and ignoring people with skin in the game.

He’s always been a pugnacious jackass. He was a trader.
He’s also right, and he’s right about the state of journalism, academia, and politics.

If there is one group I think we can all agree should be ignored, or at most listened to with a grain of salt, it's the armchair quarterbacks of the world. It's easy to sit at home or in the office with a steady paycheck and tell a guy with everything on the line what you might do.

quote:Agreed. I don't like his personal attacks on people who don't seem to be doing anything nefarious or doing poor work.
Then he got on twitter and started to come across as an arrogant douche with a chip on his shoulder.
For example, he recently criticized Jordan Peterson for speaking invitation by Monsanto at some agricultural conference. Peterson didn't seem to he advocating for anything regarding Monsanto and GMOs (which I don't understand Taleb's pure hatred of), but he immediately criticized Peterson basically for being guilty by association.
quote:I see the picture you posted, but do you have anything else linking them other than a random picture. I follow Taleb on Twitter, and I've never seen any associations with the two before.
Then he cozied up to cernovich and basically flushed his credibility.
Although a quick Google search indicates he Tweeted happy birthday to Cernovich on 11/17 then defended him as not being a racist on 11/18 and a couple others related to Cernovich's only credible reporting on when he had a more in the NSC for part of 2017.

quote:Yeah. He has a lot of valid points and he's obviously extemely intelligent. The problem is he knows he's intelligent and has valid points so he takes that out against anybody who even differs slightly as if they are too stupid or cannot have valid points in return.
He’s also right, and he’s right about the state of journalism, academia, and politics.
I do enjoy when he calls out Krugman though, since he's a insufferable hack who no longer makes many valid points. He's like a more wrong and less intelligent version of Taleb on the left.

quote:I really don't understand his beef. I think his criticisms about potential risks are valid, but he acts as if he is 100% they aren't accounting for this. Plus he just makes it so personal as if it's some fight against some moral evil.
And he is no better when it comes to his anti-GMO stance
He is out there fear mongering and ignoring people with skin in the game.

Cernovich is a clown but I don't care anywhere near as much about that as the GMO tirade. I still like Taleb a lot though based on his earlier work and his general worldview.

You lay down with that turd, you get up with fleas....it’s taleb’s painful effort to be contrarian.

He should have avoided twitter...and that can be said for most folks.

There’s nothing wrong with being aggressive in a day and age where we tip toe past statements that are demonstrably wrong.
