I keep $1,000 or so in the house. Maybe $200 on me. ( odd because I always use credit cards if I can help it, so I rarely touch the cash, but have it more so in case card processing systems go down or something )

Dad always carried cash and I picked up his trait.

We would have a bank bag of few thousand dollars in their house growing up.

Usually about $15,000.

But it’s not for some end of the world scenario. It’s for buying old cars and motorcycles on the spot from guys who live out in the country.

Cash is king when you negotiate with them. After I deplete it with a purchase - I just withdraw a $1000 every few weeks from my bank until I am back up to that point again.

My most recent purchase was a 1979 BMW R100 RT. I bought it on a Saturday morning at 9:30 am from a guy about an hour outside Atlanta. He was not taking a personal check or Venmo.

Since Katrina I at least try to keep $1000. When the gas station and grocery stores were only accepting cash for a while I learned a lesson the hard way.

$3-5k.
It’s enough emergency money to last a few weeks if the stores are cash only after a hurricane or if I run across something I gotta have.

Banks are closed way more than they are open, greatly limiting access, and if the person holding the box should die, it could be a long time before the family can get legal access to the box, and contents.
