What is the difference between a name brand (Allstate, State farm, etc) compared to a individual owned Insurance corp.? I know the Individual is usually a lot cheaper.

What do you guys have?

You need to look at the policys and compare coverages, deductibles, limits etc.

hogwash. you compare the premiums cause that's what sells! amiright! ain't nobody want that coverage when it makes that escrow go up $13 more a month.

Call a roofer and water remediation company and ask about the claims process with the individual owned insurance company.

Policy limits don't mean as much as each company's individual claims manual (i.e. how many hail hits on a roof constitutes a full replacement. Every company is different. Only a roofer or independent adjustors can give you an honest opinion).

Just went through getting quotes for HO polices for a NOLA home. Best combination of coverage and premium for us was through Service Insurance Company.

I didn’t like that Allstate had a separate wind/hail policy. The claim process is miserable enough before considering having to deal with two separate carriers just on your HO claim.

Your insurance coverage is only as good as the company who backs it. Met Life cut my HO/Auto bill in half.

Generally the larger companies have a national reputation to uphold which helps prevent terrible claims experiences. Not always the case however. Personally I like knowing someone at the agency you trust in case they need to go to bat for you with an adjuster or underwriter. Current climate is making it necessary to shop around though, I would try to find an agent local to you who can broker through a few different insurers. For instance, not all Nationwide agents have to write exclusively with Nationwide. Many can broker policies through other carriers like Travelers.

I was a nationwide agent for 5 years and I personally have my policies through Travelers, but I do plan to switch in the next couple of months at my renewal because of the increase. I’ve had a positive claims experience with Travelers as their customer on homeowners and a positive experience with State Farm for Auto as a claimant. One of their insured drivers hit me.
