I think they have become inextricably linked to retail traders, so when one moves holders of the other take their cue to follow suit and buy or sell as well.

but don't think for a second that the studios would rather you pay $10/month for a subscription, rather than $10/ticket. Big movies cost big bucks. They can recoup their investment in a weekend, thru theaters. Not so quickly thru streaming.
Thought you’d find this interesting from the Wall Street Journal:

Earlier this week, the entertainment titan announced a surprise shift in its plans for “Black Widow.” The much-anticipated next chapter in its Marvel Cinematic Universe was set to release in theaters on May 7—one year after its originally planned date that was stymied by the global pandemic. But Disney pushed the debut back by two months to July 9, and threw in a plot twist: “Black Widow” will also become available on its Disney+ streaming service the same day under its Premiere Access plan that charges subscribers an additional $30 to watch the movie.
Big ticket movies straight to streaming.

I would bet market research shows relatively little overlap between people likely to watch in theaters and people likely to spend $30 to stream.

This weekend's international rollout of Warner Bros.' "Godzilla vs. Kong" set a new pandemic record for a Hollywood film, a hopeful sign of an imminent return to moviegoing.
The film, which opens in North American theaters and on HBO Max on Wednesday, debuted in 38 overseas markets to an impressive $121.8 million, including $70.3 million in Chinese receipts. That's the biggest debut for a Hollywood film in China since 2019. The monster smackdown also grossed $12.4 million on 891 IMAX screens, also Hollywood's biggest IMAX weekend since December 2019.

Point being what exactly? One movie will not move a stock??? Weird.
If you're claiming that people are going back to the movies then yes. However, will it rise to the same levels as pre-pandemic? Even if it does those levels weren't great at the time.

China’s box office for the 2021 Spring Festival has reached 6 billion yuan ($930 million) as of 9 p.m. on Monday, according to big data platform Beacon, smashing the record for a Lunar New Year holiday with two days of the festival still to go.
I'm awaiting the next shite-slinging post with great anticipation.

You're too emotional about this, and you're willfully ignoring a lot of facts and market dynamics that do not paint a rosy picture.
I would not be buying into these types of estimates.

People have been home for over a year. Yes, there is going to be an initial push to get out. However, is this sustainable? Based on "trends" that's a no.

I don't feel comfortable shorting any stock, let alone one that makes such drastic moves on zero news like GME and AMC.

quote:Well shite! I thought it was just one movie, now you are telling me there is going to be a large surge of people flocking back to the theaters, due to pent up demand? I'm so confused now. Price is going up, large amounts of people are lining up to buy tickets, but that's just smoke and mirrors? I should just reverse my position and short it, amirite? I mean, I'm getting so much good investment advice from about 3 different people, who are absolutely convinced AMC is is about to crash, there is no way I should continue to hold this stock with all this awesome advice from folks with no financial stake.

I'd be more likely to listen to someone who has no position in a stock than someone with a vested interest.

Compared to the peak of the pandemic maybe... The new Godzilla movie on pace to do less than 50% of the last King Kong movie which was a box office disappointment at the time.
Luckily the bar has been moved

I bought $10K more in premarket. it's up 20% since my purchase.
If I had to guess, I'm going to say at best your average is around 10.

So post a screenshot of your total shares and average price. I'd bet good money you don't hold 10,000 shares.
