I think the amount of outstanding shares are 500 million, yes, and I think that simply because of the definition of outstanding shares. They are what they are. Market makers can’t change that. I’m not trying to be a smart arse, I’m simply sticking to the meaning of the term outstanding shares.
To your point though - are there “synthetic” shares too? Yes, probably, but I believe the total numbers are far closer to 500MM than 1,000MM, for example.

If this is true then the hedge funds won't be able to pay that much. They would just go out of business and some retail will be left holding big bags.
