So the time has begun for me to apply to grad school. I am going into Healthcare so I am looking at entering an MHA (Masters in Health Admin) after undergrad.

I've narrowed the choices some, but I have a little bit of the "deer in the headlights" feeling right now.

I have always been told it is near impossible to get into an MBA program right out of undergrad, but a prof has told me MHA programs will take right out of undergraduate.

Not really sure what I am asking here, but I know this board has some knowledgeable posters that could potentially shed some light on the process/situation. (kfiz, THF, and others I know you have recently gone through this process...)

The thing that is odd is that it feels like graduate school applications/acceptance is somewhat of a "crapshoot."

I'll take the GMAT this summer. Not sure how I wills score on it. I am expecting somewhere around the 650s range.

TIA.

you're a junior. you should have another 6 months before you need to apply to grad schools, right? also, why not work for a year or two before getting your mha?

It is rolling admission, but yes I do have some time. I like to plan well ahead for things such as this.

i'd like to get all the school out of the way now if possible rather than starting a professional career then going back.

I think Baylor has a pretty good MHA program.

I think UNC-chapel Hill has a top rated MHA program.

Look into a MHA/MBA double masters also. My old had this from Georgia State and had a very nice job for a person his age. The MBA will give you more options if Obamacare changes things drastically and healthcare management jobs are no longer high paying.

<=== got into an MBA program right out of undergrad and got a scholarship. Of course, I post on the OT so that means my level of general awesomeness is quite high.

Sorry for the short message my Victoria Secret model wife just called and said that she left the door open and the stacks of hundred dollar bills that I use for door stops in my 20,000 square foot house are blowing around the yard.

Yeah, I mean it depends on the MBA program. LSU? Sure. Stanford? Not likely. I don't know how important a top-ranked MBA program is for healthcare, though, may not make a difference at all. I would suggest thinking about where you want to live/work, and then finding out which schools place people in jobs in that area. Otherwise, just shoot for the best possible school you can get into, regardless of money.

I just scanned through the program--looks to be along the lines of what I am looking for.

I did notice it mentioned quite a lot of 'epidemiology' type classes which is something I don't have. The business part is exactly what I am want.

-----------

I am planning on applying to UNC's program. US News and World report is the only ranking list I see for this specific field, but they have UNC at #2 nationally.

------------

I'd like to go to a top 20 program if possible.

------------

I've looked at some MHA/MBA options and the problem I am faced with is I need to get into each program individually. It seems unrealistic for me to get into BOTH UNC's MHA and MBA programs...just getting into one seems tough enough as is.

UAB is my top choice as of now.

------------

Maybe some of you can clarify the benefits of adding another year of school to gain an MBA?

Will it add that much more flexibility to my career?

IDK, if you go the MHA route, make sure you want to be in healthcare, because I can't see that having a lot of flexibility. Obviously an MBA is about as flexible a degree as there is, but if you end up doing MHA stuff too, my guess is that you would end up being pigeon-holed into healthcare stuf, MBA or no MBA. I'd probably go get the MHA and start working, then look into MBA stuff down the road, if you find that you need it to get to where you want to be career-wise.

My wife works full time for a university hospital and will graduate in May with a masters in some kind of healthcare thing (not up to speed on the terminology). She gets to go to school where she works and it hasn't cost her anything, plus she gets up to 4 hours per week classroom time from work that she doesn't get docked for or have to take personal time for. I'm a big fan of part-time graduate school and letting the employer pay for it.

It's cool, he's doing it in a real field.

Physics might be hard, but it's not nearly as useful as business.

Lynx, you can get into MBA programs fresh out of undergrad, some require work experience but not all.

Buy the book and study for the GMAT. If you study you will do fine.

MBA is kind of a silver bullet, so it's always good to have it. It will add flexibility and reputability, but you need to do your research and find out if it's right for what you want.

I don't know anything about MHA, but if you want to know something about MBA school, shoot me an e mail.
