I've been using ynab every day for about 4 years. I love it.

Never really had a line item budget, but we always spent less than we made.
We also funded every retirement savings vehicle we could.
We are not conspicuous consumers.
We had a “budget” for housing whether we were renting or buying, and “budgets” for cars.
We paid all bills in full when due.
I’m not sure formal budgeting with reconciliation would have helped us, however, for most things having a plan is better than not having a plan.
In summary, our “budget” was simple. Spend less than you make. Save as much as you can.
I never poured over an excel spreadsheet to discuss financial things with my wife. We talk about big purchases, but there is not an allowance for either of us.
We recently had an estate plan with a trust established so we had to find all of our accounts and such. We are trying to simplify the assets as much as we can.

I reverse budget in the sense I put 20% in 401k, max an ira, auto withdraws to kids 529 accounts. Whatever is left at the end of the month gets transferred to the brokerage.
Pretty much the same for me.

5 buckets for net income.
My money.
Her money.
Our money.
Groceries and Fuel.
Bills.
Find your happy number with all buckets.

You gotta have a budget. Im retired and I know what my income is and I know my expenses. I could spend more but I don’t believe in spending just because you have the money. So I budget for expenses and for entertainment. As a retired person I still save about 3k a month and never touch my investments or savings. We do what we want and sometimes gift some cash to our two adult children.

I think I’m going to dive into YNAB this weekend, I’m making too much in order to be paycheck-to-paycheck.
