Definite nope and nope to HC either (just a small quick example, there are plenty of others though).

Funeral parlors. Military and law enforcement contractors.
Can't find anything about funeral parlors, you've got me there. Law enforcement contractors are at least seeing a hiring freeze like all other govt related jobs, so I would say that one is out as well.

Nope.

Oh and gun shops.
That one might work out to an extent.

What about megaposting on a college athletics website? Will we be seeing layoffs on td.com?

How long before people just dig a hole in the backyard for gramps?

Biggest rip off industry in the world...these guys rake you over the coals for a couble hundred dollar box (they charge ~$2,000). Then an additional 3-4K for a viewing, maybe a service, a car ride for the box, and a hole in the ground.

Here's the rule of thumb I always follow. If everyone NEEDS it then it is pretty recession proof.
But everything takes a hit in this type of correction.
So, does every one need a car? Yes
Does everyone need a Hummer? No
Are new cars selling? No
Are used cars selling? Yes, there's even a shortage. LINK Blog article on shortage of used cars.

Not so.
IT is very, very, very susceptible to economic downturns
I dunno I would say the industry is safe but no individual jobs.. every business needs IT in this age so you may lose your current job but get another. IT is spread out over everything.

The veritable carnage of job losses and vaporized earnings would indicate that this is not the case.

it's been in price as Whole Foods shoppers buy their $30 bottles of wine and microbrews. It's real easy to replace those expensive drinks with E&J Gallo and Bud Light while still getting your buzz on.
that is what i've done recently. we used to only drink microbrews and european beers like chimay or sam smith. now we're buying natty ice, keystone, and bud light

that line of thinking would make more sense with commodities or something that doesn't have a life span of over a decade. people may need cars, but almost everyone already has one and doesn't necessarily need another one or to upgrade

I've kicked around the idea of starting a collection agency. It seems like these might be good times for that industry.

With regards to IT, the co-founder of Netscape was on Charlie Rose yesterday. He said that when the NASDAQ crashed, they were the nose of the dog.
In today's depression, they are the tail, meaning they will be hit but not nearly as hard as in 2001 or not nearly as hard as other sectors. To be clear however, he was sure it was going to take a toll (loss of advertising dollars etc.)

I think that's a pretty accurate description.
