So 1 point = $0.02?

yeah Explorer is 50k plus 5k for additional card then CSP is 40k plus their 20% off deal

ETA: I never really played around with this because my wife is so anal about her credit...if she gets a notification that her score dropped 3 points she's calling the bureaus wanting to know why

Or .03 or .04 depending on how you redeem. But you should be able to get around .02 flying internationally in economy.

Unfortunately, people are terrified of credit. I have lots of people I know who think I'm stealing or something. Lots of free money out there if you aren't buying a house or car any time soon.

What does this mean? Adding a CC shouldn't be thought of as "more money I can spend". I would carry the same balance on my CC if I had 1 or 10. Zero. If adding a CC tempts you to spend more, then I agree, don't get it.

I never carry a balance. I mean making decisions based on chasing points. Applying for a card with a $450 fee I won't get much use out of when I will be buying a car this year just to essentially buy points is further down the rabbit hole than I'm comfortable with right now.

Why not get the platinum for the bonus and when the fee rolls around next year downgrade to the gold and get whatever bonus it currently is offering. The PR gold card is a much more everyday card with bonuses on things that every American spends $ on. If you still arent sold on amex downgrade again to a no annual fee card and be done with it. My two cents

Ah gotcha .

Yeah, I've probably overspent chasing points, but I know I'll burn the points. Basically paying for travel in advance at a heavy discount.

I agree with you though, if you aren't going to be able to fully use the Amex Plat, might as well wait.
I probably wouldn't jump on it either right now. I have Admirals club with the AA Exec card, and several United Club passes, so the travel perks would be wasted.

My AMEX platinum offer for 100k points expired 8/11. I just did not pull the trigger. Yesterday got the same exact offer and have until October to decide.

I'm glad to hear that. Hopefully I'll get the same offer at least a few more times until I'm ready to pull the trigger on it.

I don't use the UR portal so that doesn't bother me. I transfer the points out. The loss of the 7% dividend sucks.

Chase is dropping the Freedom 10% annual dividend for Chase Checking customers as well.

Another small chip off the block but probably enough for me to go 100% Arrival or Starwood Amex on non category spend

Except for the incentive offers to take the cards I'm feeling more and more like just spending everything on one card to maximize point transfers.

I have to quit using my Arrival for 15 months, they sent me 0% checks for 15 months so I wrote myself a check for 15k and bought a mutual fund

That's certainly a way to do it. Trying to stay flexible, but really I'm only in year 2 of this and my fiancee and I are in year 1 and 3 of careers, so it will be awhile before I can have a concrete strategy.

I got the same checks. It crossed my mind to pay for some home renovations with it, but just ripped them up instead. More out of laziness than anything.
on being opportunistic though.
