That's actually what got me looking for another card to use and when I couldn't decide between CSP and United Explorer I just got both

quote:Nice. I transferred over about $5k of my wife's credit card balances when we got married over to that card at 0%. She couldn't believe how easy it was to pay it off when she wasn't paying interest
I just signed up for my 1st Chase card (slate) last week. But I don't have any plans to swipe it

Fuel charges suck, but you can transfer to Hawaiian Airlines and Delta

Reach rewards faster with up to 90,000 Flying Club bonus miles in the first year with the Virgin Atlantic World Elite MasterCard® credit card from Bank of America.
20,000 Flying Club bonus miles after your first retail purchase
50,000 additional Flying Club bonus miles after you spend at least $12,000 in qualifying purchases within 6 months of your account open date
Earn up to 15,000 additional bonus miles upon anniversary
Earn up to 5,000 Flying Club bonus miles when you add additional authorized users to your card
Earn 3 miles per $1 spent directly on Virgin Atlantic purchases and 1.5 miles per $1 spent on all other purchases
See Terms and Conditions below for additional program and service details.

So for instance, if you were to redeem from New York (JFK) to London (LHR) using Virgin Atlantic miles, you’d be looking at the following amount of miles:
Economy: 35,000 miles (plus $500 in taxes, fees and fuel surcharges)
Premium Economy: 55,000 miles (plus $810 in taxes, fees and fuel surcharges)
Upper Class: 80,000 miles (plus $1,300 in taxes, fees and fuel surcharges)
Fuel charges suck, but you can transfer to Hawaiian Airlines and Delta
quote:
Hawaiian Airlines. Virgin Atlantic points can be redeemed for flights on Hawaiian Airlines with no fuel surcharges. Flights from the United States mainland are 31,000 points in coach and 62,000 points in first class. Inter-island flights are not a great deal at 12,000 Membership Rewards points roundtrip for coach, considering that United offers one-way inter-island flights for 6,000 miles. These Virgin-Atlantic awards are roundtrip only, but open-jaws are permitted.
Delta. Reports indicate that fuel surcharges are not being added to Delta awards. Considering the massive increases in Delta’s own mileage chart, these partner awards can be a bargain. Roundtrip flights between Europe and the United States cost just 70,000 Membership Rewards points, and first class flights to Hawaii are only 58,000 points. In fact, many of these deals would be great even without the 30% transfer bonus. That said, travelers must find Delta Awards at the sometimes scarce Low level.

Ya, I'm there but I try to keep things easy on the fiancée, now that we have a house she's more open to credit card apps, so she's getting better at it.
I'll never get her convinced to do Amex Serve though. Bummer

An open Jaw is flying out of a different airport than you flew into.
For example
IAD-ATL-BTR
and then returning
MSY-ATL-IAD
Stopover would be staying the night in ATL in the above example

Mine either. Amazon payments is as "crazy" as she's going to get.
Having physical evidince(FICO score) that the CC game has actually been beneficial(I've raised her score about 80 points in just over a year) to her has helped ease her mind and given me carte blanche with her credit. I've pulled her credit report a few times in the past to show her, now she just says "do whatever is best". She didn't think that through.

What Bacon said.
Link provided helps break it down. It can get pretty complicated, but like I said if you know how it works you can do some serious routing for free.
Like I said earlier in the thread, you can add a stopover in Australia for 5 days on your way home from Thailand or Hong Kong for free.

I'm still pissed off that I never have the sort of vacation time required to take advantage of this sort of thing. I'm usually trying to get there and back too fast. I'll forever be jealous of Europeans on that one thing alone.

I hear ya. My biggest dilemma these days is trying to cram too much city hopping in to a vacation instead of relaxing and getting in to a city. Tough to find that balance because my wife doesn't have much vacation time at all either.
It's like stopping in Nola for two days, blowing it out on bourbon st day 1, cafe dumonde for breakfast and a decent dinner and saying you've done New Orleans.
Or even Asia where you can find discount airlines and fly all over Asia for a fraction of what we pay here domestically.

Haven't been in this thread in a while and quickly glanced back a few pages to see if it was there..... But Chase Sapphire Preffered just sent me an update to their terms and they are doing away with the 7% annual bonus award
Ends in December
Gives me a good reason to downgrade the card come end of Nov when my first annual fee of $125 will be due

I honestly don't understand why Chase doesn't throw in Preferred status with any other premium card. No one ever comments on my Ink Bold, but people notice and ask my my CSP pretty consistently. It's great advertising for Chase, but from my end, I would have to spend $10,000 on travel in a year just to break even when I still get 2x points on the Sapphire for dining and can transfer points to my Ink Bold for transfers. Makes no sense for anyone who has another premium card and isn't willing to spend $100 a year to have people comment on the weight of their credit card.

What do you guys recommend for a newbie to the cc game who doesn't do much traveling excerpt for vacations. I would like to use the rewards for vacations (hotels, occasional flights), and maybe Christmas gifts.

Barclaycard Arrival and the Rewards Boost are especially awesome

I'm a big fan of the Starwood AMEX for sure. Great hotels and great transfer rates with most airlines. I actually earn more American miles with my SPG Amex than I do with my American Air Mastercard since Amex has bonuses. I just have the MC for places that don't accept Amex and for the free checked bag/priority boarding.

I'm worried that a lot of places don't accept American Express

A pretty rare occurrence. Not to mention, carrying two credit cards isn't exactly difficult.
