Just back from a week-long trip to Norway and a couple other places. Pretty eventful. Especially when I got denied boarding at my gate yesterday on my way back home. Then got the SSSS of death on my boarding pass. Worked the art to get home on the same day for a $95 rebooking fee.

Yesterday I bought a $500 Visa gift card from Walgreens with my Chase Freedom card, which has 5x's points for purchases at drug stores.

I paid a $5 fee to purchase the card, but will get 2,500 points, which when transferred to my CSR card will be worth over $50 in travel.

Made $50 for spending $5. I love this.

:)

Yes indeed. It's called manufactured spending.

Basically just strategies and loopholes to rack up CC points.

Some are more elaborate and not worth the effort IMO, but in this particular case it's pretty simple.

Stopped at a walmarks in Lafayette to unload some VCGs from OD last week. Told the money center lady how I wanted my money orders split with multiple cards. While keying it in she said I was the third person today doing that.

Haha no no Im back home now. I was denied boarding at my gate at Frankfurt airport due to not having a Canadian visa (they changed the rules to where now you need a visa to transit unless you are a US citizen). My only option was to book another flight direct to the US. Cheapest fare was $1,200 for the one way. I found availability on some flights on Expertflyer, pieced together an itinerary and fed it to the agent at the airport to have my current ticket rebooked for $95. Got home the same day I was supposed to.

The multiple entering and exiting the schenghen zone through passport control on the same day must have tripped some flags and I got the SSSS printed on my boarding pass. Basically a type of a watchlist and stands for Secondary Security Screening Selection which means they pull you aside and could do anything from a pat down to interview to inspecting all your luggage/docs etc. A huge headache until they remove you from there on their whim.

Are people messing with me? I can't tell, I'm new to this thread, but I'm loving it.

A bunch of people get this if they visit Istanbul now these days as well.

In other news:

I booked biz class seats from IAH to LIM via San Salvador for July. The stop only costs about 1.5 hours in travel time and we're getting there in the middle of the night so that doesn't really matter. Landing at 1:40 AM and have already just burned some Avios on the 2 x $80 ( ) RT flight to Cusco at 4AM. Never could burn those things so why not? Skipping through Lima since my wife gave me a very short period she could do.

Will book AUS - IAH in a while. Should be a neat little surgical strike of Machu Picchu

I've burned through my Starpoints so I may just pay out of pocket for Tambo Del Inka in Urubamba, but if someone has some other hotel choices or options I need to think about in the Valley or in Cusco, please let me know.

If anyone is interested I saw a ton of availability on that route, where I wasn't finding much of anything on United or AA websites for Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, etc etc

Does Walmart readily accept VGC's for money orders? Or do you have to find the right person or be sneaky about it?

I've never tried it.

I haven't MS'ed in a long time. With my spending habits and bonuses available, it hasn't really been necessary since the easy routes went down. I guess I could get back into it. For now I just maximize my category bonuses. I need to get better about office stores though with my Ink Bold/Plus.

After booking my trip on Sunday, I still have 150,000 UR and my wife has 35k United miles still. With spending and 1 Chase Reserve (still be there baby) at 100k about 5/6 months from now I'll have enough for 2 biz to Africa...and on we roll.

SSSS printed on my boarding pass

Would rather get the SSSS at an overseas airport than at a US airport. My wife got this on a Tokyo to Chicago segment, and all they did was search her carry on luggage. I got the dreaded SSSS on a Chicago to Montreal segment last year and was searched and then interrogated by a CBP/TSA officer by the name of Ahmed (I should be profiling him instead of the other way around!).

I'd like to know this too. I'm about to go buy $1500 worth of VCGs at Walgreens/CVS

If Auburn goes to the Sugar Bowl, I'm going to try and book a Hyatt on points.

Is the Hyatt Place Downtown New Orleans decent? 12k/night for a room that is listed at >$350

That's the Hyatt Regency I believe. Hyatt Place is by the convention center I think.

I'm about to be by a Walmart in an hour or so, so I'm gonna check the gift card money order deal. I'll report back.

There also is a Hyatt House next to the Hyatt Regency right there.

I may just do the Regency.

Hope you did not purchase or just like to spend these particular cards for fun. I would advise to do more research before you decide to do this.

I have some $99 companion fare codes for Alaska airlines. Flies to the west coast/hawaii etc. If anyone would be interested in some kind of a trade - let me know. These expire in June next year. I don't have any use for them. I'll also post in travel forum. Flights have to be in Alaska metal.
