re: Credit Card Rewards and Points Discussion

I booked a trip using Capital One rewards, 2 nights in Destin next month.
Annual Fee also comes due next month.
Wanting to avoid paying that...can I cancel my card now that my trip is booked? It says my reservation is final, so I can't cancel/change it..so does that mean they won't cancel it if I cancel my card?
I had read if you have unused points and you transfer to a no-AF card, then you lose your points..but at this point, my balance shows 0 points since I used my points on my trip (and donated leftover 2,000 points to charity)
So I'm thinking I should be OK..just wanted to double check.
Any experience with this?

They were your points to use. No issue. However, and other benefits associated with the card that you may have used on the trip (free bags, whatever) are going to be null and void once you cancel the card.

You can also call and ask how long you have to decide whether to keep the card. For example, many chase cards give a 90 day grace period. So they charge the fee, you pay it, and then if you cancel within 90 days of the fee hitting, they refund it. Cap One may have a similar policy. If they do, you could cancel it after your trip just in case there are other benefits of the card you wanted to have for the trip.

My wife wants to gift some of my SouthWest points to her sister as a BDay/thank you gift combo. To the tune of 11,000 points.
This wouldn't be a problem if I liked the sister

I burnt a good amount flying out one of my wife's bridesmaids to our wedding. It happens.

Just sucks since they are SW points and I have a companion pass.
Any way to get the 70k United + $50 statement? I pulled up only 30k

So I just pulled the trigger on an Hilton Honors Gold Amrican express surpass and got the 85,000 sign up miles.
Will they send me offers for more bonus miles for additional users in time or should I go ahead and have one sent with my wife's name now?

What do you mean? Are you referring to an authorized user on the AMEX Surpass?

Yes
The Hilton honors Amex gold surpass
I've waited on other cards and been offered up to 30,000 to add an authorized user. But I know not all cards will do that. I want to add my wife but don't want to jump the gun if I can wait a few months and get offered points to add a user.

Ah...well there is currently a 100K Surpass offer for new applicants. If you have recently signed up for the card at 85K you may want to contact AMEX and see if they'll match you to the better offer. There are reports that Amex used to match higher signup bonuses, but they no longer do so. While they don’t officially match higher bonuses, they will sometimes offer some sort of bonus upon request as a goodwill gesture. Often times, they’ll even match the entire amount to keep you happy. So, try and get some additional points this way...
Don’t message, online representatives do not have the ability to award courtesy points.
Call and say you’re disappointed that a new higher bonus became available so recently after you applied.
If you don’t get the full match then escalate. Ask politely to be escalated to a manager and repeat your disappointment in American Express due to the bonus change.
If they say they’ll put in a request to get the bonus points, decline and hang up and call again. The requests are basically a blackhole and never get honored and removed your ability to try again.
As far as the AU...I have never seen that high of an offer to add an AU on the surpass. Maybe someone has.

Frick, the offer I got emailed last night was 85,000 so I grabbed it.
Just got off the phone with them and they said tough titty
I applied for and accepted the 85;000 points and there was absolutely nothin they would do to help or raise it...
So could my wife now apply for the 100,000 special and then we just spend or transfer the miles and cancel the second card before the second $75 is due?

The annual fee is not waived for first year but yes, your wife can apply for the 100k offer and y'all use if she's never had card before (I'm on phone and can't send link).
I'm a fan of the citi Hilton reserve which offers two free night certificates which are more valuable depending on the property. (I have both the surpass and reserve and periodically downgrade the the surpass and then upgrade again for a bonus)

quick question,
Does an Amex gold card count as a credit card or no? since it is a charge card.
asking because if it does count it would put me over the 5/24 for Chase. Thanks

It's not gold.
I have used this card since 2009.
It's called the Amex HiltonHonors Surpass Credit Card.
Here's link below for 100k points if you spend $3000 in 3 months.
You automatically qualify for Gold Status with Hilton with this card.
If you spend over $40,000 for the year, you will get Diamond status.
It is handy, because Diamond is usually earned this way
To achieve or retain HHonors Diamond status, you need to earn either:
(1) 30 stays in a calendar year, or
(2) 60 nights in a calendar year
AMEX HiltonHHonors Surpass
You can stay 10 nights at the Hampton Inn in Beaumont with those points.

I'm sorry, maybe some confusion.
I have a Amex PRG and was wondering if it counted towards chase's 5/24 because I wanted to add the freedom unlimited but if the prg counts as a credit card that would put me at 5 in the last 2 years.

I see. I'm not sure about Chase 5/24. I'm thinking about adding Chase Sapphire Preferred and maybe Freedom Unlimited.
Costco doesn't take Amex anymore so I need a replacement.

Yes, it counts as a credit line, but no it doesn't count towards Chase's 5/24.
That rule only applies to Chase cards and Chase co-branded cards. Though there is some uncertainty on whether some of the co-branded cards count or not. One of the actually experts may be able to clarify that. Either way, it doesn't affect you in this scenario.

Does anyone think the new Citi Anywhere Viso Costco card will ever offer a bonus? What was the history with the Amex costco card and bonuses?
Posted on 6/20/16 at 12:28 pm to RedHawk
Met my SW signing bonus last May 19 to get me to my companion pass (Chase even confirmed). June 20 and still don't have the points.

This is false, it is any 5 credit cards from any bank (not just chase) in the pAst 2 years. amex prg almost certainly would count. There are some chase co-branded cards that are not affected by 5/24 rule yet however
