I've only cancelled 1 Amex SPG personal and I held it for 2 years. With all cards I wait till the fee hits and try to get some sort of retention offer.

Oh I see. So you've never had the Plat, PRG or Hilton offers? (I got the 100k, 50k and 100k on each of those respectively)

What's the Mercedes plat offer? I just got a target invite for reg plat for 100k points after $3k spend which is timely because it's almost time to cancel my Ameriprise Amex plat. Have also gotten a couple biz Amex targets (gold and plat). This might be the summer of MR accrual for this guy.
Also, is the everyday card still the best free way to keep MR points active?

Nope. I got my wife the delta 50k card, spg personal 30k, but she currently has none.
I'm having a real hard time holding her out of the CC game, but for the companion pass and two southwest cards at 110k points being worth 220k points for sitting on the sidelines for another 7 months seems worth it I suppose. And I'll blow out her credit in 2017 after I get her the chase cards.

Currently using citi double cash and Amex blue. Looking for a travel card. Typically fly United or SW 4-5 times a year. Thoughts?

Very straightforward:
Do you have a travel companion? Are you interested in earning the companion pass?
Right now is a good time to go for this because all 3 SW cards have 50K offers on them. You can go for the 2 personal cards, and meet the minimum spending requirements on those and you will have 104,000 points. You will need 6,000 to go to earn the companion pass @ 110K (basically buy one, get one on SW anytime you fly on $$ or points) through December 2017. Plenty of easy ways to get the 6K points. Links for the cards:
SW Plus - $69 Annual Fee
SW Premier - $99 Annual Fee
This is about a ~$3,600 value out of 2 sign ups. Best deal out there.
If you are not interested in the Companion Pass, then go for the Chase Sapphire Preferred. 59K points (which can be transferred to SW) after you add an authorized user and meet min spend.
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $95 Annual Fee waived for the first year. 2x points on Dining and Travel
You can cancel all these cards after your points post and you get to keep the points. However, I recommend you to keep the cards open for at least 11 months to test them out.

SM Chase about matching ink. They will match. If you got denied already, try again. As of 4/27 they changed their policy. Now they'll match all offers within 90 days. I, ofcourse, am at 91 days as of that day. Got denied twice. Already asked a third time

Awesome. I will inquire. Wonder if I should SM them before it posts? Statement closes next week I believe and I met minimum spend last week.

Should I transfer the balance from a Marriot rewards card to a chase Saphire card? Does it offer better rewards? The Marriot card has been a pain to add enough points to use for extended travel.

You don't get points for balance transfers.
The Sapphire preferred is a far superior card though.
Marriott card should really only be used for Marriott spending.

Most Chase cards that I've seen don't offer balance transfers in. Slate being the exception.

I see your found your way here. In context of your post in the Travel Board - please be advised that this strategy is not without its pitfalls. Be very very careful. Not trying to be dramatic, but the drawbacks are very real and the effects are long term.
Other than that, after you've done your due diligence, ask any questions here and you will get enough help and advice Im sure. Good luck.

100%. SM sooner rather than later so you are as close to your app date as possible. I like to be safe myself. If you have met the spend they will manually post the 10K. If you haven't they will tell you that they will match the offer and to SM back after meeting the spend for the incremental points.

Nah, I've learned from my mistakes. I currently have 1 card that I've had 16 years and I maintain only a 100 dollar balance on. I cut up my previous cards that I took out when I was younger and working on paying them off one at a time. So it is taking a bit more time than I wanted.
The GF has the Marriot Card that I pay on, we currently owe 1k (used it in Europe) and it gets paid down monthly, even though not to a 0 balance. I pay 250 a month on it currently but we use it in order to keep/obtain points, never spend more than 100 on it a month so I'm paying it off slowly.

Not trying to be your financial advisor - but you should pay off your credit card debt to $0 if you have to live on Ramen for the next 6 months. Interest rate is too much Consider applying for a personal loan from a local CU/bank as well.

No need for a personal loan, card could be paid off soon if we choose. Just different advice told us to keep a balance on the card over paying it off each month.

Unless the card is 0% APR. Literally the worst financial advice anyone has ever given anybody else apart from payday loan.

Low APR, but they said maintaining a small balance is better than paying off every month.
