You can both get the card and you can both authorize each other as users. But, you only need to keep one of the cards before so you aren't hit with 2 annual fee charges after the first year.
To expound.
Once you both apply separately and get a card each, you'll have to meet the sign up bonus twice. $3,000 in 3 months for each card for a total of $6,000. The points you earn can be pooled together, you can send the points from her account to yours or vice versa depending on which Preferred Card you keep open. The pooling of points can be done online, and is pretty straightforward.
Once a year is up, whomever you want to downgrade, I'd suggest downgrading to the regular Chase Sapphire. It still gets 2x on dining, no annual fee, and to keep it open and active, you can put the occasional meal on it and send the points over to the Preferred account that is still open.
Cancelling the account does nothing for you IMO, since the churn-ability of Chase cards is deeply disputed. Churning is the ability to sign up for the card again in the future and receiving the new customer sign up bonus again.

I always had the mentality of having as little debt as possible and I have been rethinking that as of late.
For the purposes of this thread and credit cards, this is still good advice. You shouldn't be accumulating any long term debt while doing anything you've read in this thread.

You ever have any more luck at the OTRs? I was able to max out my card and my wife's card, but it wasn't an easy task. It took multiple stops to do it to find a competent clerk.
Kind of sucks not being able to apply for cards for 7 more months
. Now I just have the same ol' boring cards.
I did get my Office supply store LLCd, but haven't had time to research CC processors. I was going to use Paypal, but I believe I will be able to get a free gift card scanner with certain processors. Just haven't had time to do the research.

Yes, that's what I meant to say.

Haven't gone back to one. I was hoping to try out the V gas stations when I head through BR next weekend on the way to a wedding. However, I tried the TA station on I-10. I was 90% through the transaction until the register goofed. Manager came out and said "cash only." Bummer. Then I checked my credit statement and the charge showed, so I disputed that and it came off a few days ago. However, my statement closed and I got the points, so I'm wondering if they won't notice or if I should send those points to my business account ASAP

After I surprised myself with a United card, I'm in the same spot. I finally got my reluctant fiancee to get a Barclay's for her flight to San Fran, so I get to have about 10 days of fun with that one earning the bonus for her. But ya, overall I'm bored as all hell.
I have one more flight to book this year and need to run calculations on my UR point balances. I need enough points by January to book my honeymoon for late 2015.

Thanks for the tips! The main reason I am looking at the Sapphire even though I have the Capital One Venture is the points/miles seem to be much more flexible when redeeming with other airlines etc.
I'm just looking to be able to book hotels/flights once or twice a year for vacations for cheap or free.

Where do you go on vacation? With recent devaluations, if you are flying economy domestically, Capital One and Barclay's World Arrival aren't bad options. In fact, they may be preferable.
I'm planning on keeping my Barclay's around to cover award flight fees and taxes, and hotel chains and such I can't cover with points.

We mostly travel internationally for vacations. Usually Caribbean destinations since we are divers. Trying to go to Philippines in November.

I was hoping to try out the V gas stations

This will definitely be a card I'm getting next go around. Disappointed I didn't get it last time.

Southwest has several flights(Airtran) and is a good low cost option.
American Airlines has 12.5k one ways offpeak to Caribbean.

Ya, it just crushes the redemption possibilities if you can't snag a Bold and an Ink Plus and put all your eggs into the one trip basket. If you're hoping to spread out your points, you're in coach my friend.
I think this is forcing me to try to use all the stopovers and open jaws I can to get value out of any trip.

Great thread, you guys seem to know your stuff when it comes to maximizing benefits of CCs.
Looking for advice here. I am on the verge of moving to SE Asia and am looking for a CC with no intl fees obviously. I currently have a United MileagePlus Explorer card that i use for Airline rewards. I have heard from people where I am moving (Indonesia) that MasterCard is the most widely accepted there. I would like to get a card that can supplement my current airline card namely with hotel/travel rewards or cash back of some form. Any suggestions?

The Barclaycard Arrival card.

Ya, I think you're right. Its a good "supplemental" card and its a Mastercard.

Sounds legit.

I would have said CSP or some AMEX's but figured Mastercard was his preferred.
40,000 bonus miles right now. Might be another offer better?

Yes and No.
The 40,000 points is the highest out there, however, they raised the minimum spend for the bonus from $1,000 to $3,000. HOWEVER, a blog I read says if you apply over the phone, you can get the $1,000 spend offer. I hope the guy reads this.

I don't really have anything to add, but I had to report on some quick service. I went ahead and signed up for a starwood american express and they over nighted the damn card to me.
Competition must be rough.

Nice. It's a good card. I'm about to go back to putting most of my spending on it.
