Thanks for the help. Any links to travel blogs and any other websites I should check out to learn more?

Southwest has probably the easiest rewards program
Any ticket on any flight can be booked with miles as long as it's available for purchase.

Southwest points are roughly worth 1.4 to 1.6 cents per point. He'd be better off using any 2% card over the Southwest card as 2 cents > 1.6 cents.
It's all math.
I do love me some airline cards for the sign up bonuses but if we're going to talk spending on them, I have yet to find one I've ever kept after year 1. It's just not worth it unless you frequently fly that program and get perks that you need like business travelers require.

To keep an airline card you have to use all of the benefits to offset most if not all of the annual fee. IMO.

Yep, but that can be as simple as just booking a couple rountrip revenue flights per year and having your checked luggage fees waived.
The Barclays Advantage Aviator card is the only airline card I intend to keep. 10k points upon renewal essentially pays for itself.

You have the Red or Silver card? If your spend is high enough the Silver card can grant up to 10000 AQM miles. Add that to the 10000 AQM miles that the Citi Executive card grants with the proper spend and you're nearly at Gold status and those 500 mile upgrades.

That's the truth. My wife traveled fairly regularly on Southwest, so it was a great card when you combined the travel and car rental points with the CC points. Now that she doesn't travel, it's not worth keeping so we're looking for another card. I'm definitely going to miss using companion pass...both of us traveling somewhere and only having to use points for one ticket was a killer setup. Despite traveling regularly for fun, we haven't paid cash for a flight in over 5 years.
I receive the 100,000 AMEX Platinum offer almost once a month. I'm thinking about jumping on that, using the points for an up coming trip or gift cards, then cancelling or downgrading to Green or Blue after the first year. I know there has been a lot of discussion on this and people say it's a good for churn and burn if you get the offer.

Wait so I get 10k miles for just renewing my annual fee each year for the aviator card?
Posted on 10/27/15 at 8:41 pm to Civildawg
Not necessarily. You need to log in to your account. Click on my rewards then how my rewards work. If that benefit is not listed you do not get the 10k miles after paying the annual fee. Additionally some get it only for the first anniversary and some get it every anniversary.

Ya, the version I applied for didn't come with the 10k a year bonus so I cancelled. Would have kept it if it did since Barclay's is known for sending out those "Spend $750 for 15,000 miles" promos all the time for current cardholders.

Well shite, I didn't know about this. My anniversary is coming up in December so I'll check then but just looking at where you said it doesn't seem like I have that benefit. Seems dumb they don't offer that to all their Aviator card members. I'll probably threaten to cancel and see if they offer up a free annual fee or the 10,000. If not, may have to cancel like Teddy

Just got this email:
I don't use Avios but this is a pretty big increase eh?
The other classes in that range going up too:
quote:
We’re going to be making a change to the Executive Club pricing structure for shorter reward flights originating or terminating within the United States of America. From 2 February 2016, reward flights will start from 7,500 Avios, instead of 4,500 Avios, plus taxes, fees and carrier charges (“TFCs”) from $5.60 USD.

Ya some people aren't going to like that but don't think it affects me.
1) I don't really have many options that are even 4,500 miles (maybe Dallas?). I know MSY to MIA was a hair over the distance for 4,500.
2) 7,500 and 15,000 RT is still cheaper than anything else. Guess it was a matter of time.
Thankfully it's US only. Wife and I have been throwing Peru back into the discussion and those 4,500 point flights from LIM to CUZ on LAN are nice to have.

I just have the Red. I don't have a need for status on airlines. I only book a handful of revenue flights a year and they are on SW for the kids on vacation or to ORD on a direct for work.

The Avios change does not make me happy. First, Amex reduced the ratio for transfers to Avios and now BA raises the redemption price on the short segments.
I have a couple hundred thousand Avios.

Doubtful. If you were going to spend 4,500 Avios on a short haul award flight, I'd imagine you'd still spend 7,500. It is still the cheapest major domestic airline award redemption.
I have never been able to use the damn things anyways. It's great for east coasters. Not so much for us bottom of da map folks. AA tries like hell to route you through their hubs out of MSY or BTR almost mandating a 2 segment route.

Ya, and even when doing two 4,500s I still couldn't get it to work most of the time.
As mentioned, I'll just try to burn these overseas I guess. Can't be too mad, I didn't really spend any money to get them.
