So, normally with the Sapphire Preferred (CSP) and Sapphire Reserve (CSR), you have to redeem points through Chase’s travel portal if you want to maximize value. They’re worth 25% more with CSP and 50% more with CSR. On everything else (amazon, apple, statement credit, etc), they’re usually just worth the standard 1 cent. Sometimes you can get lucky and get 2+ cents by transferring to travel partners, but this isn't guaranteed.

Chase added a feature in June called "Pay Yourself Back," where you can make a purchase in an eligible category (right now it’s grocery stores, home improvement stores, and restaurants), then have the ability to reimburse yourself with your points if you like. The kicker is that you get the same extra value that you would get from Chase travel redemption (1.25x and 1.5x). So as a CSR holder, if you spend $100 at the grocery store and pay yourself back, instead of losing 10,000pts, you only use 6,667, or $67 worth.

How does this help us? Whole Foods sells Amazon gift cards. Say I want a new $1000 gizmo. I just need to go buy (2) $500 Amazon gift cards at Whole Foods, pay myself back with points, and because of the extra point value, I’m only getting deducted 33,333 points for each gift card instead of 50,000. $1000 purchase becomes a $666 purchase. Groovy

I know some of yall mfs have hundreds of thousands of points banked away, this is a good way to get the same point value without having to travel in these crazy times. I have 200k I'm sitting on and don't plan on traveling any time soon, so I may as well use some for this

Thanks for the info, been banking the points at this time thinking we would be taking a trip at some point.

Airlines transfers to United/Southwest were always the best use of points. But they are starting to pile up at this point, and with airlines pricing going down going to be even more difficult to spend

What is the best card right now for points? United sucks terribly and I’m about to dump it

yeah, they usually do well. Hyatt offers some killer deals as well, I've seen very nice rooms offer in excess of 2cpp on transfers

the 3 best no-fee cards right now are

Discover It
- 5% back on quarterly categories (this year it was Q1 groceries and drugstores, Q2 was gas, ridesharing, and costco/Sam's, Q3 is dining and paypal, and Q4 is Amazon, Walmart, and Target)
- Match cashback on all first year purchases
- 1% back on non-categories

Amazon Prime Visa
- 5% back on Amazon and Whole Foods (if you have Prime)
- 2% back at restaurants
- 2% back at gas stations and drugstores
- 1% back everything else

Chase Freedom Unlimited
- 3% back on dining and drugstores (new addition, huge)
- 5x on Chase Travel redemption
- 1.5% back everything else

May also want to look at the Citi doublecash card for 2% on everything

If you spend a ton on groceries, check out:

Amex Blue Cash Preferred - $95 AF
- 6% back at supermarkets and streaming services
- 3% back on gas, transit, and ridesharing
- 1% back everything else

I reject this statement.

Chase UR is a shadow of it's former self. Southwest was never a good use of points. United's devaluation has been tremendously hurtful.

Hyatt is pretty much the only good partner now.

I'm heavily investing in Amex MR these days.

Chase wishes they had a travel partner like ANA.

Less than 90k points RT business class to Europe/Japan? Yes please.

Great share, Carson!

I have a Chase question.

So I am sitting on a lot of points and I went to transfer those points to a Hyatt so I could take this sexy little Colombiana to Mexico.

However, since I dropped the CSP and moved to a no fee card, the transfer option is gone.

What options do I have to get those points transferable again

Hyatt is the best transfer partner of Chase UR. I'm heading to Hyatt Big Sur Ventana for 4 nights end of October. $2k/night or only 30k pts. The Ziva/Zilara all inclusive are also a steal for 25k pts per night.

CSP, CSR, Ink Business Preferred

Gotta have a Chase fee card to unlock the transfer option.

Look into picking up the Ink with your business operations I know you have.

I think as long as you have one of the fee cards, you can transfer. Not aware of any 0 fee cards that allow transfers

Korean was great for round trip to Hawaii for 25K pts once upon a time. I was able to take advantage of this a few times before it was nixed.

Ya, tough program to figure out but was a good one.

Now the only ones that can have sneaky value are Iberia/BA to Europe if you can avoid London fees.

Virgin Atlantic is another good option. Delta one upper class/business 50k pts or Asia 60k pts. I did a trip to Madrid and another one to Venice. F to tokyo on ANA twice (unbelievable deal and service) but used Amex to VS 30% discount when offered.

Were you booking solo VA on ANA?

I went via ANA for business because I was booking for two and ANA window is 350 days out vs 330 days out for VA.

Saw that for the most part, it is very hard to pick up two seats in first, but not impossible.

Sadly, I had to cancel Japan due to COVID, so rebooked on Turkish Air to Croatia for next year.

I'm very curious when international travel opens up what the award dynamic will be.

Never solo. Two is pretty common on ANA F (search on united). Three if you're very lucky. If you don't go through VS and book directly on ANA website you may have more luck (though more pts) also I position to Houston which seems to have better availability than JFK and others.

I used about 150k points with the 1.5x pay yourself bonus.

As someone said, UR isn’t what it used to be but the 1.5x on 3% purchases is solid return if you are not traveling.

What’s your play here?

Amex has never seems to transfer to travel at the rate of UR from what I’ve seen

Thanks for the heads up, I just cashed in about 125k points. Since we aren't taking a big trip this year may as well use them.
