Canned food business

I have an idea for a business, that is COMPLETELY out of my area of expertise. I'm very confident that this is a huge winner, and could bring life-changing money.
Basically, I have an old family recipe for a type of sweet pickle. Grew up with them, never paid it much attention. My wife had them the very first time, and raved. As did my ex-wife. Wife gets the recipe from my mother and start doing them herself at home. Gives away some jars to various people. Everyone wants more! Some ate the whole jar in one sitting.
I have looked everywhere for something close to this that is commercially available, but there is nothing like this to be found.
So here is my question, do I attempt to take these commercial on my own, or approach a big operation that is already set-up for production?

I’m pretty sure I know a similar recipe. It is awesome. I get a few jars each year from the family farm. Not sure why no one makes it for major distribution.

Jar it and sell it at Farmers markets. Then try to get in a few local grocery stores. Once you have proof of concept, you need to work with a manufacturer and try to get it in Rouses or AG stores.

My neighbor started a pickle company in his garage..cooked them in his kitchen… used crawfish pots to clean jars.. packed and sent them out… it is growing… (still a side gig) he nows cooks them and has someone else packaging them … … had another neighbor start a salsa business at home… you can buy his salsa nationwide now .. and he does not live in my neighborhood anymore.. moved up!
I think you can rent space in commercial kitchens think tanks kind of places…

Canned pickles and salsa can be very, very profitable if you have a good product.
There are a couple of baws in NELA that have a very high quality product. Once they get quality control over mass production, they will have a cash flow machine.
So yes, get stared. It may take some time and setbacks but if the product is good, you can find a way.

Yep. Start it off as a hobby and then go from there once proof of concept has been achieved.

Shopify + TikTok + Dribbble.com for a designer = Profit.

My stepmom had a salsa business some years ago. Just make sure you have all the info you need to make your cooking set up able to pass the health inspector. IIRC my dad had to put a certain covering on the walls, add more sinks, and a few other things.

This sounds like a recipe for lawsuits between family members.

I see what you did there
Eh! There’s honestly no protection for recipes. So he honestly can do whatever he wants with it. When it comes to food, cooking, or recipe there’s nothing the family can honestly sue for because there’s no “intellectual property” protection in place for good or recipes.

Alabama law states I can do a bakery out of the house, but pickles are a whole different game, and I get it. Lot's of safety concerns.

quote:That's a whole other concern. Big company steals my idea! I know this sounds unbelievable, but I honestly think I'm sitting on a HUGE, money making idea. We've given jars to a bunch of people, and all of them shared with other people, and I'm getting tons of feedback looking for more. The common comment is "I've never had anything like this".

If you do this, you're in a distribution, marketing, and sales game, and no proprietary recipe from anyone means anything.
Sell 1 product to 1 stranger for $1 or more and now you have a business. Sell $1000 a month and now you have something scalable. Sell $10,000 a month and it's time to hire the right people to let this be your full time gig.
Good luck.

Send me a couple jars to sample and I'll put you in contact with my uncle that owns a rather successful canned food company.
