Can I sell my car tag and receive credit?

Never done this before so fuzzy. I am moving to a neighboring county as I received a wild cash offer on my home. The county I am moving to has much lower taxes on vehicle registration - in my case over $1,000. If it wasn't a large amount, I wouldn't care. I just got the new one last month, before this offer. Can I return it back to the county office for credit in this case?

You’re going to have to call the county to ask them but don’t be surprised if they laugh at you and hang up.

So you're going to ask the county to give you back your tax money?? Good luck with that. Please let us know how that goes.

I was asking because if I sell my car, I can get a credit. Some counties when you move into it will provide the credit. When I moved to Lafayette county they issued a credit.

I would just think you may get a credit from the state or County.

Assuming you live in Ocean Springs:
MS Motor Vehicle
Most states are similar with only a few offering an actual refund.
quote:
Mississippi law does not allow for a refund of registration fees or taxes. However, when the vehicle is sold or ownership changes, the owner may apply the unused portion of a registration to a new Mississippi registration. The tag from the vehicle that was sold must be turned in to the county Tax Collector. Credit is given from the first day of the next month following the date of the tag’s surrender. A credit certificate will be given to you if you are not purchasing a new tag the same month. Credit can only be given from the time the tag is turned in, not from the time the vehicle was sold. You may use the credit certificate in any county of this state.
Mississippi law does not provide for refunds when an individual moves out of state and cannot use the credit.?
