The tablet/ereader market is poised to explode IMO.

quote:

E-book sales from the 13 publishers that report results to the Association of American Publishers’ monthly sales program rose nearly 252% in the first quarter of 2010, to $91 million, the association reported this morning. Growth actually slowed somewhat in March from the earlier two months, but sales still increased 184.8% to $28.5 million. The e-book gains were easily the biggest in the industry in both the quarter and March. The AAP added a new category in the month, downloadable audio, and sales from the 10 companies that reported results rose 32.5% in the quarter, to $16.4 million; March sales were up 29.3%, to $6.2 million. Sales of traditional audio were up 14.7% for the quarter and 8.6% for March

Phone screens are just too small for proper reading of books, watching of videos and surfing the web. It may not make sense to us guys because we never carry anything that won't fit in our pocket, but women have purses and students have backpacks. Plus I bet these devices end up getting used mostly sitting in a chair in your own house.

Like I've said, the iPad is the best web browsing platform in existance.

Anyone that disagrees hasn't used it.

Videos imbedded in web pages for instance, you play them then put two fingers on the video and flick outwards and the video goes full screen and is pristine. When you are done, you put two fingers on the video and flick inwards and the video goes back to imbedded in the page.

Nothing can compare to web browsing on the iPad.

My desktop has a 32 inch monitor and I don't remember the last time I sat in front of it because browsing on the iPad is superior to it.

The business I work for has 3000 people in the field that need to access internal websites, and display engineering drawings at high resolution, currently everyone is using a notebook PC, but our technology team just returned from meeting with Apple, and the ipad will probably be deployed in the near future.

Yes, but like the argument isn't whether tablets themselves are useful, its whether iPads are useful, relative to the competition. iPads will 1) be crushed technologically/feature-wise within the next 6 months, and/or 2) the tablet market will be completely comoditized within 2 years. They'll never get the huge compound growth they got out of the iPhone, but analysts keep factoring it in as such.

I have, and its not, and its not even close. It doesn't have flash, that is the end of that discussion considering the number of sites that use flash.

OMG it does multi-touch? NO WAY.

I can't take anything you say seriously now. They are neat devices, they are not the end-all be-all of web browsing or tablets in general. Its a 1st gen technology for christ sakes, but whatever.

I laughed at the ipad when it came out but got to use one the other day. Now I'm buying one for the gf to use at home instead of a cheapo laptop for surfing.

It is slick as hell.

What, no Farmville?

Websites are adjusting to Apple's not having flash.

I almost never have issues with having no flash.

I disagree. I think they will be every bit as technologically inferior as the iPods and iPhones have been their entire existances, but I also think that just like for those 2 devices, it won't matter. People don't want technologically advanced, they want simple, easy and shiny. People also are suckers for hot and trendy and no one works the press like Apple. The preorder failure for iPhone for probably did nothing but increase demand.

iPod possibly, iPhone definitely not. The original iPhone and the 3GS were head and shoulders above all competition technologically until the very recent past. The verizon Droid and the Nexus One were the first phones that could even challenge the iPhone, and even then they certainly weren't superior in technological terms. The new wave of smartphones (Evo, Droid X, Samsung Wave, etc) match or surpass the iPhone 4, but Apple has such a huge lead in terms of brand loyaly by essentially building that niche industry, they'll still move a ton of iPhone 4s. The growth rate of iPhone adoption will decline though, and again, as far as stock prices go, especially for companies valued like Apple is, growth rate is the only thing that matters.

I don't see that happening with the iPad. Yes, they have already gotten out ahead of everyone, as they are prone to do. Yes, they will move a ton of product, as they are prone to do. However, unlike the iPhone, it isn't going to be 2+ years before someone can match the iPad in terms of technology or functionality. They won't have time to build that level of brand loyalty and hold on to market share with the death grip they have with the iPhone. Its not about losing market share, its about not getting it in the first place.

It isn't about Samsung or MS or Motorola or whoever "surpassing" Apple, either in terms of phones or in terms of tablets, nor is it about Apple somehow becoming unprofitable in any sense of the word (even though that seems to be the Apple fanboy mantra), nor is it about the iPad or the iPhone being bad products (they clearly are not), its about all of those other companies combining to eat up the remaining market share in those niches, lowering the literally exponential growth rate Apple has experienced in the past 5-6 years. The market has it priced in to continue at that level, but I don't see it happening. There's a reason we have supra-normal equity valuation models.

I don't disagree with that in the slightest, but I also think Apple's competitors, especially on the tablet side, have learned that as well, and I think you'll see that evidenced by the type of tablet and the OS structure that accompanies them. Google OS (not android) is practically a rip-off of the iPhone OS as is, its completely dumbed down into a bunch of icons.

I guess I see what you're saying. iPod and iPhone were unexpectedly good so now expectations for the iPad have been adjusted based on that so it needs to be better than spectacular to exceed expectations.

Yes, more or less. The iPod and iPhone (at least in my opinion) revolutionized and basically created the mass market for their respective technologies, and as a dork, I am eternally grateful to AAPL for doing that. The tablet isn't even a new invention, its just been updated with current tech to make it more viable/mobile/shiny/etc. I don't see AAPL as a trailblazer here like they were in those other two markets, they're just the first one in line (eg very little differentiation), and everybody else is right behind them.

150 million copies of Win7 in 6 months. Just saying. A buddy told me he's at Lakeside in nola and that the line goes basically to Dillards (read: across the entire fricking mall). Please note this does not change what I have been saying this entire thread.

Early news reports (pervasive) reporting a rather serious issue that if you hold the phone in your left hand it can't make calls. Come on APPL.
