I have been getting a lot of recommendations for toyotas and hondas. I used to have a CRV when I lived with my parents and my car in college was a saturn. That one is no longer drievable.

Been looking at accord/focus.

I will definitely look into the classifieds. Thank you for that suggestion. I hadn't thought of that.

I am definitely going to purchase something that has been well maintained. THAT is my #1 for purchasing this next car. It can have 120K + but I need it to be well maintained. I have a buddy that is a mechanic that does great work on all cars but I do not want to be putting in $100-300 a month in repairs like I did with the Saturn. FCK THAT

Sounds like you have a good resource to evaluate the car before purchase.

those cars didnt even get 20 mpg NEW, let alone after 20 years of use

I routinely get 280+ miles out of a 14 gallon fuel tank.

That's 20 on the nose & I don't know what to tell you.

Gfunk, you sound like my annoying uncle. Nobody asked you to lecture them and not a single person in this thread has talked about their Tahoe. This thread was started to help out the OP, not to help you get a free tank of gas.

OP, late 90's accord or toyota.

Those Tahoe notes must be grating on you huh?

Honestly, your gigantic compensating mechanism makes it sound like your lack of a cool vehicle is really grinding on you.

Maybe you should take some pointers from your boy E on style.

I would like to know how many people he has met who have a $800 car note.

Agree that he lacks diplomacy, but there is some wisdom in avoiding a car loan.

However, I doubt he has envy towards those with nice cars. Most anyone who can fog a mirror can get one.

I don't have a car loan, and I probably never will, but you don't see me putting a gigantic "look at me" sign up for it. I think notes on luxury vehicles are one of the most depressing outward sign of how ridiculous my fellow americans are.

I imagine he is fairly young and just proud of himself for not falling into the trap that most kids do right out if school.

I'm 33, and I fell into traps called student loan debts, credit card debts, & making tons of money in the mortgage industry without ever thinking to pay them off.

Till I got out of the mortgage industry and took a staggering paycut & lifestyle change.

If I have a huge Look At Me Sign for being liquid, I'm gonna wear it every chance I get.

Sorry for Partying.

No, I don't drive a new Tahoe. I drive a used 2000 Chevy silverado that has 188,000 miles. I, with my Dad as the co-signer, purchased the vehicle my junior year in high school and paid it off one year later. I have driven it during my college years and will continue to do so now that I am graduated.

My point to my earlier post is that you are preaching to the choir and no one wants to hear your shite. You are annoying and I mean that in the nicest way possible.

Go to a big used car dealer and find the one you want. You should be able to talk them down 1000 to 800. Be sure to point out everything that is wrong with the car. I just bought my daughter an 01 Exterra with 107K miles in great condition for $5200. I had just looked at one in a lot worse condition for $6500.

Btw my Tahoe note is only $400 and will be paid for in 10months.

I bought a 1998 Toyota 4Runner Limited in 2007 for $5,300 w/138K miles. I was in a HUGE financial hole & had to finance it for a $200/month note & paid it off a little over a year ago.

The Sunday after I made the final payment someone hit me & totaled it.

I bought another one from a local dealer in Denham Springs for $5,800, this time it was a 2000 SR5 with fewer miles than my '98 had originally at the time I purchased it.

I have been car-note free for over a year, & I currently have 150K miles on my truck.

I will probably look to get something else once I get up around 240K miles so I'm in position to buy at 250-280K miles.

Toyota's quality & craftsmanship during the time period of the late 90's early 00's is impeccable. Change the oil, get a tuneup if you just bought it. Change & rotate the tires, and it'll run forever. Literally.

I backed into my Grandmother's Buick after she parked behind my '98 a few weeks after I got it. All I did was shatter the tail-light. I ordered a replacement online for $13 or so. I needed one Phillips Screwdriver & a pocket-knife to open the package.

The 2000 I bought had a wood-grain interior that I hated. It was also in declining shape. I paid about $130 for a 3M interior package. Went to Home Depot and spent $20 on some scraping tools & some adhesive solvent that was vinyl friendly.

Spent an afternoon under the shadetree at my house & had it changed in 2 hours to a nice piano black finish trim on the dash and on all four doors.

I've spent a grand total of $6000 on my automobiles not including standard maitenance since late 2007. I don't give a red rat's arse about what kind of car I drive. I keep them washed & detailed, & I laugh at all of you chunking $800/month down for your Tahoe's & new Suburban's.

I'll be getting 20+ mpg in a car that I don't pay a dime on. The AC blows cold, my iPhone's music plays through the radio, the Airbags will deploy, & I will stay in the black while you're busy reaffirming the debt on your GM financed waste-of-moolah during your Chapter 13 filing.
