I'm at the point where I need to choose a section of BA to have a career in...

1. Accounting
2. Economics and International Trade & Finance
3. Finance
4. ISDS
5. Management (all types)

My question to you all is....

What is the most satisfying career out of the business admin majors? (salary/ease/family time/benifits)

Accounting. Sucks but you can easily find a job, even now.

Go Finance but trade energy not stocks. I know people who have made lottery type money doing this.

Based on these criteria, I definitely agree with the votes for "Accounting". If you have the time and inclination, go ahead and bang out a graduate degree, as you'll want want 10 years from now I'm pretty sure.

My friend, who graduated in December, does this. He makes bank, but you have to be really proactive and go get internships with the Exxon's and Shell's of the world right away.

Thats the plan

I've been leaning towards Accounting, Human Resource Management, or Entrepeneurship Management

Accounting...gota get that Masters/CPA though...

Accounting > Engi on a long term perspective...

All my engi friends a few years out, even the ones with advanced engi degrees, are going for their MBA or taking the LSAT

Is that to get into a different business or to further their education and use both engineering and business knowledge in their current industry?

I'm definitely planning on getting my MBA because you need the business knowledge to run a company, but the engineering undergrad degree gets you working at more than decent pay immediately, unlike a business degree.

I don't think that's necessarily true, you just have to be a lot more proactive about finding internships with a business degree if you want to match the starting pay of a typical engineering job. At least, with the people that I know, that's been the case. Both are good degrees and solid fields of work.

First question is what do you like? My life would have been miserable had I gone into accounting despite so many here recommending it. I would think any of the majors you listed besides Accounting and ISDS would require going to grad school to be worth anything. If you go into either Acct or ISDS the Internal Audit program used to be a great path to an internship and a job after graduation.

I'm really good at math, but i dont really enjoy it but if it brings home the bacon, i'll be more than happy to do it.
I also like being in charge of things.
Thats why i narrowed it down to Accounting/ Entrpeneurship M./ Human Resource M

Not true with regards to accounting but that is true to the other business degrees.

Accounting Internships PAY MORE and are easier to get then Engi Internships...plus they come with AWESOME signing bonuses

if you have a pulse and are attending a decent accounting school...you WILL get an internship...some are better then others though

they will come to your school, take you out to dinner and drinks, they will fly you to florida to golf, take you to galveston to deep sea fish...just to lure you in...Once they decide they like you they will put you up at the W and wine and dine you some more...ACCOUNTING INTERNSHIPS ARE LUCRATIVE

Engi and Accounting BOTH are win win...

I'm an Accounting grad student fwiw. I just know that I know several people who majored in some type of engineering that were average students with no experience, and got great paying jobs directly out of college. The ones who actually tried and did internships in college are making even better money.

On the other hand, I know several [obviously] accounting students that have graduated in the past two years, who all have good jobs for sure, but make probably 10-20% less than the engineering guys. Pretty much every engineer I know makes 60-80k, some outliers substantially more, either in Houston or NOLA. I finish my MS in Acct next August, with my CPA done hopefully by October of this year, and I would be happy with anything around 50. Every person I know that has graduated in the past two years and gone to a Big4 makes under 65, most closer to 50.

Some of those people just have an undergrad, none of them had a MS and/or CPA completed when they applied, and I don't know how those salaries scale over 10 years or so, but that's been my experience with starting salaries of engineers and accountants.

ISDS majors seems to do alright, the rest are pretty much a crap shoot though depending on your grades and your persistence in getting at least one internship, especially if you go with something like management or marketing.

people i'm starting with are making 59k a year...plus year end bonuses...MS and CPA candidates

I agree.
Engi is better short term... LONG term i give accounting the edge...my engi friends get pissed when they see the CFO/CEO with Big 4 acc. experience making more then the most senior engi people.

EDIT...i forgot to mention the brightest acc. majors...the REALLY smart and motivated ones are Investment bankers making 120k...who will then go make bajilions of dollars in the P.E. firm world...

again, BOTH ACC and ENGI are win win...and i definitely don't have all the facts

In Waco?

ETA: I highly doubt the second part of that, unless they went to an Ivy league and work in NYC.
