Whatever you do, do not avoid filing your taxes by 4/15 or file an extension by tomorrow.

Just filed and set one up through my IRS account. You have setup 3 or 6 month short term plans with minimal penalty but they also have a longer term plan option if needed.

My hang up is that I attempted to set it up last year and it looked like I did yet they never pulled any money from my account. I’ve accrued minimal interest on last years amount (not even $100). I want to set up a plan to get rid of last year and this year. A 3-6 month plan would be just fine. I just want to make sure I do it right so they do actually pull.

Follow the prompts on irs.gov. It's pretty simple.

Intentionally? Even if you're outside the 60 day rollover window, you might have options depending on circumstances.

You can log in and go manually pay it each month. I don't recall setting up an auto payment when I did mine, so I'm assuming I'll go in each time I want to make a payment and have 6 months to complete.

I set myself up last spring after a 1099 year punched me in the mouth. It was surprisingly simple. I created an IRS Online Account, hit "payment plan," and because my balance was under $50k they approved a long-term installment automatically with no phone call. I picked a draft date that lined up with payday and the first ACH came out the next month.

A few weeks later I had a question about penalty relief, so I ran it by Tax Law Advocates in the middle of the process and they pushed first-time abatement while I kept paying. The combo worked: the plan kept collections quiet and the penalty reduction shaved the balance
