I’m looking to transfer my 401k from previous employer account to new employers account. I’ve never transferred 401ks before. Is there anything I should look out for or any different transfers I should consider?

My new plan allows for pre-tax contributions, after tax contributions, and Roth 401k contributions. I’ve only ever done pre-tax. Would it be recommended to do after tax or Roth 401k instead of pretax?

As far as the transfer itself, does my old account basically sell off all investments then that balance gets transferred to the new account?

Transfer the old 401k to a traditional IRA.

Roth 401k is usually best choice if you have that option.

People on here MUCH smarter than myself can probably answer better, but when I've had to do this I first contacted the company managing my new company's retirement accounts adn they walked me through everything. There were some forms to fill out, sign, and fax to I believe the previous employer's retirment company, then the 2 companies figure everything out themselves and transfer it over. At least that's how I remember it, it's been a few years.

What's the new company Match?

I'd highly recommend transferring into a Traditional IRA, gives you more control of investment options, etc.

As has been pointed out, transfer to a traditional IRA.
It's the same thing except you'll most likely have more investment options available to you.

Company matches 6%.

So transfer old 401k balance to transitional IRA, then use Roth 401k for current employer retirement account?

Most all use Vanguard or Fidelity. I use Fidelity and love it but you can’t really go wrong with either.

It's a balancing act, and a lot depends on your current income and future income expectations.

for simplicity's sake, i'd probably keep it with the company you currently have it with, assuming they offer IRA's and are reputable

option 2 would be to transfer to IRA at whatever firm your current employer uses, with the same caveats above

My existing 401k is with fidelity. I also have a vanguard account with a Roth IRA, but my income combined with wife’s income is more than the limit allows.

Should I consider backdoor to this existing Roth IRA?

That's great. That'll make it simple, I'd just keep it with fidelity

Consider? Absolutely. But be aware of the tax implications.

also, keep in mind, that if you are happy with your current investments, you really don't have to do anything at all

let it go and let it grow

sometimes the funds available in your 401K plans are not available in the same structure in an IRA

Best advice.

You will have much more flexibility in an IRA with Fidelity or Vanguard.

Also, Roth 401k will diversify you in terms of tax obligations at retirement.

Two main things I tell people to look at -

1. Your rollover into the new company's plan may not be available to you in a rainy day. There is no requirement the new company allow you to withdraw that rollover until you have a distributal event - which can be when you leave the company. I would check with HR on that and/or read the SPD.

2. A lot of times you can get a cheaper rate by doing it as an IRA. But not always. So I would carefully look at the fee disclosure for the new plan and see what the total fees are. Compare that to your IRA options.
