"What in the tire world" (spoken like my 5 year old) just happened in the market? Dow was up 70 points seems like no time ago and I just checked and the Dow is down triple digits.

quote:True, but it still makes the game a little unrealistic from a trading standpoint.
But lets be honest, 99.99% of us here are not playing with $1,000,000 in our real accounts. Noticed I left 0.01% out.
My StreetSmartPro trading screen shows the volume of shares traded in FGEN for each transaction. The most shares I've seen traded in one transaction this morning is 600 shares.
But I traded 40,000 shares in one transaction and jlu03 traded 66,000 shares...TWICE in two buy orders.
I made almost $34,000 in my game account's short trade of FGEN, but IRL that would have been impossible even with my $1 million+ to trade with.
The game only looks at the prices and if the market hits those prices, the trade is executed. IRL, there would not be enough shares available to trade, not only at the price limits we entered, but at ANY price, most likely.
Still it's fun to play with bitcoins...er....I mean, fake money.

The point I'm trying to make is why I can't make these type of percentage gains. Obviously I know it is impossible to trade in and out of a stock like that which is so thinly traded. Whether it's $2MM or 20K I only care about percentage.
FYI... Been actively trading since I was 11 so I understand how markets and trading work. Not trying to be a dick.

My lesson learned 4 days into the game- There's no way in hell I could be a day trader with real money. Fake $500,000 stresses me out enough when I start losing on a short. I'd probably jump off a building if it was real money.

I haven't read through this thread all that much. Is there a way to do options trading? I can't find it on the website.

I believe it is not possible. I thought it was earlier, but Russian corrected me.

I thought you were referring to the tens of thousands of dollars in profits we both made this morning trading a humongous (that's technical investment terminology, but you already know that since you've been trading since you were a mere lad...

Well as soon as I pick up DGAZ in the fake account it tanks but I'm heavily invested UGAZ in the real account.
I hope my fake account goes to $0 by holding DGAZ.

It looks like dividends are ignored by the game. No additional shares and no cash inflow into the account from dividends. Bummer.

Are you for real?? I picked up several high yielding dividend stocks. Was going to hold on to them for a bit. We don't get dividend payouts???

Well, that will change my strategy a little bit.

Thanks for passing this info along.
Big up day today on the DJIA so far. I noticed that ATT was down a lot. Checked and sure enough it is going ex-dividend - $.49 a share I believe. As a previous poster stated, this is not good news for dividend plays.

To be honest, someone playing this with the intent of building a portfolio for 30 years down the road was not going to win anyways, but the game could have helped them to see how things like that were handled. I am trying to branch out from my real account and take chances I would not normally take. Granted, I did plan on having some dividend plays in my portfolio, but oh well.

All of the dividend paying stocks in my other game account are now well past their dividend payable date and there are no transactions showing the dividends coming into the account and I still have the same number of shares I bought in December so no dividends reinvested. Plus the total net worth of the account, adjusted for gains and losses, is still $1,000,000.
That's a glaring weakness in this game for anyone who wants it to mirror real brokerage accounts.

So I just executed my first short trade. Is it essentially like going long, except you want to see the price go the other way? Whenever you feel comfortable with an amount you sell?

quote:No, you buy to close (cover) the short position, not sell.

ETA: On the game's trading screen you click on "Buy To Cover" to close the short.
