stewie...what happened to your piece on money spent with recruiting services? Looked like you were on a witch hunt but then I never saw the follow up.
I wrote a 3,000 word piece on it last April. (LINK
The general conclusion was that the NCAA created a problem and then punished schools for addressing that problem the only way they could. Third party recruiting services were created because of NCAA policy, but instead of accepting that, the NCAA goes on a witch hunt of its own.

eta...as far as Dandy Don goes, he goes way back to when there wasn't anything else on the Internet outside of the old geaux.com, which was mainly just a message board. I still contend he was one of the first "bloggers" on the Internet, although the format wasn't called blog back then. The info available now has surpassed what they can do, if I were Scott I'd turn it into a tribute site with links to other LSU content...but I certainly respect him trying to keep it going.
Did Don pass away? I know he was very sick.

Not unwarranted criticism, just a little more objectivity. Journalistic integrity is based upon this principle. Anyone can write fluff
I gotcha. So, are you speaking in terms of calling out players for bad play, coaches for bad coaching, administration for bad moves? General game to game criticisms?
Or just, in general, not tossing softballs every media session/trying harder to get more than the run of the mill answer on tough issues?

247 does a really great job. Shea Dixon is just awesome at what he does.

All good feedback. Thanks. Especially teammates talking about one another. Gives me a really good idea for a season preview type of article.

More in line with this. I'm of the Mike Gundy school of thought when it comes to media calling out college kids for their play on the field. "I'm a man, I'm 40... LOL

I think all anyone asks for is objective reporting, don't decide on an angle you want to take then go dig for evidence. Certainly there is always going to be a beat writer that is a sunshine guy, and that's fine, but you typically have the anti-sunshine guy who just throws out red-meat for the haters trying to make a name for himself, and that's fine too. But both writers have to be ready to take the heat.
I agree with Lester on the player-angle articles...

I get that. And I think that the major media outlets around here do a good job of objective reporting, for the most part. Are there examples to the contrary? Probably. But I think all the writers around here know how to write, and we all, as professionals, work to maintain relationships with our sources while not catering to them.
I'm more interested in finding out what's missing rather than what's wrong or not wrong, to be honest. I think the program has a lot of coverage, but there are always gaps.

I've been listening to coach's press events since the dawn of the Internet, and I've always been disappointed in the quality of the questioning. It's typically either an attempted gotcha or a softball. I'm interested in what goes into decision making, and if you bait the coach, you're not going to get the answer (see the JJ/Lee questions over the last 4 years).

Stewie,
Dandy is all LSU, the papers/tv cover other stuff.
Lester nailed it. We eat up details about the players. Who they are, how they think of their teammates, life obstacles, close teammates, etc.
Coaches too. Make our coaches human.
Here's one...the future #18...explain why he (rumor) earned it bc apparently every ranter knows...but can't explain it.
I hate the TP and WWL radio's "coverage" of LSU. Advocate was last great in 07. I use internet links to various sites. During fb season I check Nola and adv every day. And I check the rant abt 20 times a day.

Coaches' press events are a joke. The quality of questioning is a product of the kind of questions that will be answered. If you ask a "tough" question, it might be the last one you ask.
Lee Feinswog is the best press conference questioner I've ever seen, though. Holy cow, he's good.

As far as local media coverage goes, I need less of it when we are not in football season. Whoever is on 104.5 from 11 to 1 is just god awful. I cannot listen to more than 1 minute of it. I far prefer the Herd and Scott Van Pelt when we are not in football season than listening to those local guys.

Hard to do with limited access. But not impossible.
Wright Thompson wrote this on Les last year. Absolutely nailed it.

I actually like Sports Today, though it is better when something LSU-related is going on, no doubt. But you can't top SVP and Rusillo.

He did. A couple of months ago now. His son Scott has taken over the site.

This is exactly my point about pandering to LSU. If our writers are restricted in the types of questions they can ask, can they really report in a way that will help the fans understand what's going on. No wonder we flock to the internet grasping at every piece of "news" we can get our hands on.

Not much the reporters can do though if they are truly going to be punished and shut out of the room for asking tough questions to be answered. LSU AD controls all the cards here, they know that journalistic integrity will never trump being allowed to cover the team.

This is probably why award-winning journalists such as John Adams, Jimmy Hyamns etc all left. At some point a true sports journalist musk ask themselves what is more important: being able to cover the Tigers in the limited way they are allowed or go where they have more journalistic freedom. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying other schools are different. Not by a long shot.

The AD is just doing its job, which is to protect the interests of the university. And the media does the best with what its got.
Let's not pretend here: it's like this at every major college football program. In fact, I'd say LSU has it a little better. Miles is pretty frank, and Bonnette is great at giving reporters freedom without compromising his responsibility to control the flow of information.
It's more of a systematic issue than one specific to LSU or LSU media, is what I'm saying.

Living close to New Orleans it sucks. The only news we receive about LSU is when something goes wrong. Last year when Jefferson was in trouble we received a load of coverage. This is Saints country and the local media is so caught up in the Saints world that they forget about any other sports teams.

As to your question bout the visiting teams' coaches & players, just anything would do as opposed to what we get now, which is nothing. When the Air Force was in town, their coach had a great personal story to tell & we got virtually nothing from him. But with teams coming down from the N.East & this past season the West Coast, I'd have liked to have heard what their coaches had to say bout LSU, the game, stadium, etc. I spent some time with the ND coach when they were down & he was raving bout the whole program, how talented we were, etc. The same with the Or.State team. Maryland's coming down this yr, as is Washington, etc.
