we will not beat good teams by constantly starting drives with great field position and only getting 3 points.
Exactly. How many times have we made 80 yard drives on offense that resulted in touchdowns. Twice against Vandy.
I really want to see how they do against WV, whose defense isn't elite but it's quite formidable.

Great analysis, the only problem is you are asking irrational drunks to think rationally. Being able to run the ball in the fourth quarter and play great defense wins games. Miles brand of football is very, very old school similar to what we saw in the NFL before it became a primarily passing league. The Jets play this brand of football and it damn near got them to the Super Bowl, their only problem being Peyton Manning. I don’t see Peyton’s reflection in any sec quarter back this season. I’ll take this combination versus every other sec team. Auburn needed a missed fg in ot to beat Clemson, Arkansas still can’t play defense and Florida can’t seem to work out their snap problems. On the other hand Alabama still looks every inch the national champion. Do Alabama fans complain that they play great defense and run the ball?
I do wish they would stop running that lead option, or veer give, whatever you want to call it especially to the short side of the field. I cringe every time they pitch the ball.
BTW do you think Ole Miss is just that bad or did a light go on in Vandy?

he has like 20 starts under his belt. At what point does this excuse get thrown out?

which is why i was amazed and furious Miles never let Lee throw.
I’m sorry but why in the hell would you want to throw the ball with five minutes left in the fourth winning 29 to 7? I know the kid fumbled but that’s a mistake that young players often make.

I think mostly the first part. Everyone assumed that Masoli was going to step in and be a difference maker, yet he was just good because of Oregon's offense. They have good defensive players in Lockett and Powe (surprisingly), but they lost a majority of their secondary, and a good portion of their offensive line as well

do we have a running game like Bama?
or a competent QB like Bama?
no, not even close on both accounts.

that is great, but at some point people need to realize our overall performances on offense vs Vandy and Miss St will not win us games vs Bama, Auburn, Florida, etc. It amazes me people cannot grasp this.
this is the story of the last 2 seasons. Miles wins ugly games against shitty teams by grinding it out, instead of trying to improve the offense and open it up a little to see what they have. Then we get behind a good team and we cant do shite because we have no idea how to open up the playbook.

At the same time that people realize it's not all his fault. Crowton really needs to go, but not many on here tie Jefferson's struggles to Crowton's horrible offense.
He's not a great quarterback, but he's a good one. Also, with the pleothra of running backs that we have, you would think that we would establish a good running game, but yet Ford and Ware fail to see any offensive snaps.

Jefferson played well tonight. Don't get blinded by stats.
Posted on 9/18/10 at 10:57 pm to ZTiger87
Jefferson only had 16 attempts. With a short field and several drops it hurt his stats.
He really looked solid when they tried to run the offense through him in the third quarter.

That’s part of it, but he was 19 of 35 passes for 190 yards, and he rushed for 104 yards, with a 28-yard touchdown run. Kids talented, he accounted for most of their offense. I’m not sold on Vandy because they are always paper thin and play their best football in September, but I think they are going to make some heads turn. I think it makes our defense look even better given what we did to them.
What do you think about Florida? Three games deep into the season and still having snap problems.

You have a problem with reality. Good thing we were playing Moo State tonight, and not 'Bama or Florida.
Ok I don't get it. Did you not watch the games the last two years when we played Bama?. Here is what is arguably the best team in the conference, we play em without a QB and they BARELY eke out a OT win here in JL's "pick six" year and then job us last year at their place when we lose our starting QB and starting RB and best CB. Do you think Bama has gotten better this year. Has there been a big change over in our talent level or theirs? They come to Tiger stadium this year folks and we are better on defense this year and no worse on offense. They are the same on offense and worse on defense. Just as it has been the last several years it will be a close hard fought game that we can win if the breaks go our way. Idiots on here get seduced by watching early season games and comparing wins and losses and get all bent out of shape without remembering what history tells you. Man up princesses and quit being so scared, it gonna be aight!

Umm he did play well 10-14 minus Sheps two drops is pretty good. 70% actually.
Anyways great post geauxaggies!

I grasp it very well, but at the same time this team is very young and losing Will Blackwell on the first play of the season hurts. The line is coming together, but it’s young. At present it maybe just a little bit above average. There’s a lot of football to be played before we get to Alabama. As for the rest of it, if you are still worried about Auburn you haven’t been watching. They haven’t gotten better at all over the last two weeks. Near losing to Miss St last week and having to go to ot at Clemson is not impressive. Alabama and Florida both can go either way and will be low scoring games, because both teams have been winning the same way we have, by running the ball and playing defense. Jeff Demps has 200ypg playing against scrub teams, but their Qb is green and three games into the season they are still having qb exchange problems. They don’t win without Demps just out running inferior competition on defense. Alabama is another story altogether, 100 yds on three carries says it all.
People always seem to forget that last year we were leading in the fourth quarter in three out of the four games we lost going into the fourth quarter. Why did we lose, couldn’t run the ball in the fourth quarter end of story.

people want Miles fired for a reason. This is also the reason i have little confidence to beat good teams these days.

Very quality post. I agree with 95% of your assessment, but won't roll out my 5% due to my appreciation of great analysis.

People do. Why else would they be calling for us to still be throwing the ball while winning by 20 points with five minutes left in the fourth? There are definitely some problems that need to be fixed. Teams not there yet but they are close. Running the ball, and clock control was a big thing last year. He seems to have somewhat fixed that problem. It’s obvious that he and Gary are at opposite ends of the spectrum in offensive philosophy. It’s also obvious that it has hurt qb development. If Miles wants to be a power running team then he needs to hire a power running oc.

And actually compare the 3 games and JJ DID play GREAT cheers up we are 3-0 with a QB that aint perfect but if put in the right situAtion and play calling will allow us to win games. I appreciate the OP and enjoy reading his take oj the game
