Why would he got out of his comfort zone to hire a mid major coach with no pedigree unless his hand was forced? Makes no sense to me.

I think a deal was reached with NCAA and Matt McMahon is the direct result of that. Give it a few years, the program gets in the clear, McMahon goes bye bye and we go for a homerun hire!!

Because those other programs have a lot richer history than men’s basketball…

You’re not getting the equivalent of the coaches you mentioned to come coach basketball here

What do you mean no history. LSU basketball has more history than all other SEC schools except Kentucky.

Who else was he going to get with sanctions pending? Even if they weren't pending, LSU basketball isn't a job where you get an established coach to walk into a dumpster fire with zero scholarship players on the roster.

I can agree with this.

We will take our beating with McMahon for 3 years and look to make a move. The only issue is that LSU basketball fights an uphill battle getting people to go to games and engage that I fear that 3 terrible years will do irreparable damage. Hopefully we can Atleast upgrade the pmac in that time.

Look to the wbb, it just took 1 year! Remember how empty the stadium was the last few years of Nikki, and don't tell me LSU wbb has a richer history than mbb

This. Look at the guys who are winning in the SEC right now. They were all retreads who fit in well in their new gigs or up and comers. Nate Oats came from fricking Buffalo. LSU went the same route, but it’s always hard to see how a mid major coach will translate up. Many of them don’t work out.

UK is the only program with the ability to go out and land a brand name coach right now because of their history and focus on hoops.

Because those other sports didn’t have serious sanctions looming when the hires were made. What big name coach from a big program was interested in coming with so much uncertainty? LSU mens basketball also doesn’t carry the same weight those other programs do in their sports.

Womens basketball was an elite program for a long time not that long ago. Mulkey being from here also had a lot to do with getting her.

Seriously? Take off the P&G glasses man. Arkansas has a title and had a great run through the 80s and 90s and UF has 2 titles. LSU has none. We have wins and a lot of tourney appearances, but that isn’t the same. That puts both of them in a different class.

We were fortunate to hire one of the GOAT WBB coaches who has Louisiana ties. And historically our WBB program has been better than the MBB program. The men's program has had its moments, but is barely over .500 all time.

mid major coach

Slicky Willy came from a mid-major if I remember correctly. That said, no basketball coach from a Power 5 program would leave their gig for LSU. Not happnin’…

That's what I am saying too. His hand was forced, he couldn't hire a big name with those sanctions looming so MM was the compromise.

It’s basketball he didn’t have as much of someone else’s money to spend.

This is my thing, what established P5 name was a realistic get? This is just a program where you need to take a gamble at the non P5 level, we got a non P5 guy with a lot of skins on the wall and on paper is exciting to see what he could build with P5 talent and resources. It’s been disappointing the last few weeks. Hopefully he and his staff are adjusting and will figure out how to quickly get dudes in the door otherwise his tenure will be short.

Think he’s used to stashing guys and reaping benefits to older players that have developed. Don’t think that can work in this league with the quality of players our rivals are bringing in making immediate impacts

Give coach Mac a few years at least 2 as he has no G play and no rim defenders. LSU can't score the ball at this point.
