I have been wondering that myself. This team
Scores almost every time they get the ball. I say let everybody we play try and catch us. Also we can make any offensive adjustments sooner. This also could result in the D not being on the field as much the first half. At least.... at least one possession.

It's correct

Majority of NFL coin toss winners now defer choice of whether to receive until second half

The number of teams that won the opening coin toss and chose to defer has dramatically increased since the rule was adopted for the 2008 season — from 38 percent to 68 percent.

2012: 55 percent

2013: 65 percent

2014: 68 percent (through Sunday’s day games)

quote:

And it doesn’t stop with the regular season. Check this out: Since the rule was adopted, in four of the past five Super Bowls the team that won the coin flip deferred, preferring to open the second half with possession rather than the first.

This is from 2014. I'd bet it is even greater disparity now.

Here is my evidence. I'd like to see yours.

Bill Belicheck always try to get a score at the end of the half then receives the ball for the second half. I’ll go with his method.

I 've posted this a few times over the yrs when this question comes up, so this may sound like an echo. NEVER in the history of fb has a coach uttered these words late in the 2nd quarter: "Boy am I glad we are kicking off to start the 3rd quarter." Always defer.
