with this team shouldn't we take the ball for the opening kickoff?

we might as well take the ball and score first.

against a real tough opponent we might defer, but I was wondering why the hell we deferred against NWS.

Always, always, always defer when given the chance.

Always.

You want the ball to start the second half with momentum. The 2nd half opening drive is a chance to put a game away or at least build momentum.

The hope is to have the ball right before half so you can get a 2 for 1 situation. Also, the opening drive of second half is way more important than opening drive of the first half.

Right. If we could have pulled this off against Texas we put the game away on the first drive

This, not that unsimilar to basketball.

If you kickoff first as Team B, say this is the possessions:

1st half
1. Team A
2. Team B
3. Team A
4. Team B
5. Team A
6. Team B
7. Team A
8. Team B - Score with almost no time left
9. Team A - Wasted possession kneeling it out, no time on clock

2nd half
9. Team B

Basically like stealing a possession if you play your cards right.

Absolutely not.

You want the ball in the 2nd half.. especially in college.

Our defense seems worse in the 2nd half too.. shut these teams out in the first Q.. get out in front.. and get the ball at half is ideal AF..

ESPECIALLY in BIG GAMES.. where teams often start slow by getting a feel for each other.

That sure worked against Texas.

In the NFL they usually elect to receive. LSU has an NFL offense. They can go out there and put 7 up right away and set the tone is the thought process for it.

But I agree with always deferring. There's nothing greater than having the chance to score right before the half then getting the ball back after halftime.

Offenses generally have more success later in the game as opposed to earlier. Always defer.

If by "correct", you mean 83% of NFL coaches electing to defer, then you're right.
