To break up the monotony of football crash and burn threads, Will Wade was on Off the Bench this morning to talk about the team and upcoming season ( LINK)

Here are some notes on what Wade talked about.

On Javonte Smart:
- Great honor being recognized as a Bob Cousy award nominee
- Will be great and had best shooting score in 3 pt. drill on Mon. (made 100 of 108)
- Exhibiting great leadership skills

Offensive outlook:
- Jokingly said if he just stays out of the way, they will be alright.
- Told story about a TN high school coach who had a talented team and one day while Wade was observing their practice all they did was 3 on 2, 2 on 1 drills and then scrimmaged, and the coach told Wade he probably wondered what he was doing. The coach said I could coach them a lot, but we wouldn’t be nearly as good if I did.

Defensive philosophy:
- Have spent more time working on defense this offseason and in practice than probably last 3 years combined.
- Said that both Armstrong and Nickelberry are well versed in the defensive philosophy and scheme they plan to run. (Of note, Armstrong coached under Andy Kennedy at Ole Miss, who generally had a really good 2-3 zone defense)
- Said the defensive culture and mindset was all over the place the last few years and had you asked players what were the 3 main defensive focal points they had as a team, you probably would’ve gotten 15 different answers. This year that is different and all the players, 1-15, are on the same page defensively and know what the staff wants and expects out of them.

Extended and unusual offseason:
- Said they lost their way last year and weren’t where they needed to be. Said there was several reasons for that, but it starts with him.
- Said the culture they had built in the first 2 years had gotten off track and out of whack, so he knew they needed to get that back and “recalibrate”.
- Having big roster turnover helps with this b/c they didn’t see what things were like last year and the returning players knew that things weren’t right and are excited to get back to a better culture.

Mental part of game:
- Expects this season to be even more of a grind and teams will have to be even more mentally tough.
- Have spent more time and a whole new level on the mental aspect of game.
- Greg Graber (mindfulness coach), Joel Fish (sports psychologist), and Bruce Buggs (LSU asst. dir. of mental health for student athletes) make up the "high performance team" and work with the team extensively.
- Changes to staff have been huge for them. Vernon Hamilton is new asst. to HC and Lebrent Walker was moved up from GA to coordinator of basketball ops.
- Feels they are very high functioning and probably the best from an organizational standpoint they have been since here. Said it fell off last year, but are getting it back (he eluded to the culture of last year a lot…curious what this is about…I am assuming some of the reasons for why Heiar left played into this).

Schedule and fan capacity:
- Most of what he said is the same that Royal had in his post from last night in the schedule thread; so I’ll just post his comments here and a link to the post: ( LINK)
- "I was on a Zoom call with Will Wade last night. He hoped to have the schedule finalized by the end of the week. I think he said there will be 6 non-conference games followed by a multi-team event (MTE) in early January. The MTE is being finalized this week.

PMAC attendance is going to be limited to approximately 25% or 3,000 attendees. The bleachers will be pushed back to allow additional room between the court/players and spectators. This will obviously shrink the 100 level seating. He mentioned changes to team seating and scorers table (but no details). He also said that television commentators will be remote.

I recall La Tech in early December at home, South Florida in Atlanta, UNO, and VCU. He had two offers he was considering for the last non-conference game and he would figure that out this week as well."

Jalen Cook:
- Jordy asked specifically about him.
- Wade said that he is a hard worker and one of the early morning guys.
- He is shooting well, really smart and studies hard, solid defender.
- Still has some things to learn especially on running the offense and knowing when/where to pass the ball; but they are confident he will grow and has the ability to become great.
- Wade threw in that he told Cook’s dad the other day that he would like to know “who the hell rated him as a 3 star because they didn’t know what the hell they were talking about.”

Can't wait for the season to start and see how Wade blends this talented roster and gets the most out of them. Should be a great season in a very challenging SEC.

Any mentions on what Penn-Johnson may look like?

Like to hear this. Talent can carry an offense but defense is all about effort, discipline, and repetition. Gotta hammer it into these guys.

No, he wasn't brought up at all. Really didn't spend much time talking about specific players. Only talked about Smart b/c of the award nomination announcement this week, and Cook b/c Jordy asked specifically about him.

Penn-Johnson should play, especially in early part of season if Leblanc likely can't play while waiting on his transfer period to end. But I only expect about 12-15 mins. per game and to mostly give you a big man presence in the lane on defense and hopefully give some rebounding effort.

I do as well.

However, I'm still a bit tentative on buying in just yet on the new defensive philosophy. We have heard Wade say before in the past before a season started that they focused on defense a lot and it still ended up not being very good.

But I will say that his statements have been different this year as he is going a little more in-depth on some of the philosophy and how they plan to use players and drilling more of a defensive culture and mindset. So we will see if it pays off.

I just know you have to be a great team at communicating to be successful in a zone defense; any defense really, but especially zone. But the past few years it has always been a struggle for the team to communicate effectively or forcefully enough with teammates on the defensive end of the court.

Orgeron should try some of this. Seriously.

Get the football team back on their mental game.

Wouldn't disagree with you there. However, O seems too old school to buy into what most would likely refer to this as being "touchy feely" type stuff.

Maybe Marucci could talk him into it.

Listening to Wade and O talk is like night and day. I don't think there is any detail of the program Wade doesn't evaluate. Maybe almost to a fault. Other than recruiting, O is a complete "big picture" guy. He knows what he wants something to look like, but he's not maniacal about the details it takes to reach the overall goal.

If, IF, LSU is better on defense, then they should compete for the SEC title. Plus, with football crashing and burning this season, LSU fans will be desperate for a winner. Football has long overshadowed basketball (except for a small stretch in the 80's - 90's). Last year very few, understandably, really cared that it was basketball season until February (the last full month of the season) That's fine and expected. But this season Wade made have a chance to build a bigger fanbase from those just wanting to turn off football until next season

Does this put the kabosh on the MTE in Lincoln, Nebraska on Thanksgiving weekend that had been talked about a little?

Everything I've heard is that Cam Thomas is going to be really really good.
This team is deep with quality players and Wade is going to get back to more of a fast pace game where he substitutes a good bit like he did at VCU. When you know you aren't playing 38 minutes a night, you'll be expected to give 100% at all times on the floor, both ends of the floor. Go for the offensive rebound and sprint your arse back on defense.

The last 2 seasons LSU has played at a pretty fast tempo, so I'm not quite sure how much faster they can go. Also, if they are going to play more zone defense then that tempo should decrease significantly. A big emphasis of the zone is to force the opponent to work more and longer in the half court.

If LSU goes more zone then I think you will see both the tempo and scoring numbers drop...and that is COMPLETELY OK if the byproduct is holding down your opponent. The fact that LSU scored 90 last year in a game vs Vandy doesn't mean shite when you are letting the worst team in the league score a season high 99. While it may be a little less exciting, I'll gladly take 75-67 wins vs. 95-92 OT thrilling losses.

No, he stated they are still playing in that one, but ware waiting to hear who the teams and schedule are.

The additional MTE that Royal referred to in his post made it sound like one that would be towards the tail end of the OOC schedule; however, Wade said something about the beginning of the season, which is when I thought the Nebraska one was being played. Maybe there is just a bit of confusion on some of the terminology being used or which ones they are specifically referring to.

Definitely. The thing I have liked hearing most when Wade has spoken about him is that he is an all around scorer and not just a shooter. Meaning, he does a good job of getting to the lane, creating his shots, and gets fouled quite a bit, which plays right into Wade's offensive philosophy.

Very true statements. However, I will be curious to see how he balances the use of the zone with full and half court pressure defenses.

The way he has spoken, it sounds like he wants to use the press even more this year than in years past when they primarily used it in spots or at the end of games when they were down. Plus having a deeper, longer, and more athletic roster certainly lends itself to being able to do that more without fear of unnecessarily wearing out players.

Using the press and half court pressure will definitely speed teams back up. I'm excited to see what he has planned and hope all the defensive talk hasn't been just that, talk.

lol...definitely.

The best part, which I didn't mention, is that Wade said it is a very intense drill that requires the player to constantly move around and in and out of the arc making cuts, receiving passes, and shooting. It's not just a stand and shoot casually type drill. I would imagine they also have managers with the sticks that stand at each spot to provide some level of distraction or challenge to the shot too.
