Will our run d be better than last year?

i'm not worried about the corner and the edge, but the 1st two levels of the middle. i know pep wasn't the greatest, but can freak and brockers equal or surpass he and drake? is ferguson ready to contribute? whoever takes over the middle, they aren't as big as Kelvin and it would be unusual if they could be as productive in their first year starting there. i know if anybody makes it past them, their heads will be knocked off by loston and reid, but i worry if we have enough meat in the middle. the good news is we get to find out soon.

I hope so, but it's all speculation at this point. Watching Auburn run at will on us was quite depressing, as was Knile Davis pounding it down our throat in the 4th quarter last year. We need to be better than that

I think we will be as good in different ways. i think our pass rush will come from the edge more with hopefully a healthy Montgomery. i think our DT will stuff the run more so that pass rush. I think you will see both CB tested, and both succeed, opposed to one side completely locked down.
Really only question mark is MLB, but i really trust them to find a way. i'll be honest in that i wasn't extremely impressed with Kelvin his soph year, but i was proven extremely wrong when chavis stepped in.

This is what gives me hope for the LB's this season. LB play under Chavis is the best I've ever seen at the Ole War Skule.
AFA the run defense, I think we have a lot more depth than last year, and that should be the key. Plus, I expect the offense to move the chains more, thus keeping the defense off the field longer.

It will be about the same.
The Auburn game was an anomaly and the run D was serviceable outside of the Arkansas game.

I don't see it happening with Nevis being gone. I hope they surprise me though

This is really the million $$ question and the only real answer is we'll have to wait and see.
SEC games are won and lost at the d-line and a team that can stop the run will win the big games.

BEASTS OF AUGUST
BEAST be he fierce & BEAST be he strong
Fight Ferociously Tiger for all the game long
LSU to be tested from the north to the south
Facing the game plan we call Smash Mouth
College Football's a war won in the trenches
Those proven unworthy shall fill the benches
BEAST Be he fierce & BEAST Be he strong
Playing fourteen games in a season so long
Enemy OCs with their orchestrated attacks
Shall rush up the middle to break our backs
Running quickly inside praying they splinter
That defensive heart, running right at Minter
They will try to run 'tween Freak & Brockers
Behind overweight lines & big slow blockers
Alas, they have not iron or muscles of steel
And will never be able to Match Moffit's Zeal
BEAST be he fierce & BEAST be he strong
Fight Ferociously Tiger for all the game long
When we stymie their attack North to South
They will go the air and forget Smash Mouth
But what is waiting for them, all fans will see
Is the greatest passing dee in school history
Tyrann to their left and Eric Reid to their right
Another pic-six has the fans howling all night
BEAST Be he fierce & BEAST Be he strong
Fight Ferociously Tiger for all the game long
Our goal Atlanta to take another SEC crown
Then on to the dome to bring da house down
Will finish later ... I want it to be 28 lines

No. LB will be a weakness and we'll have a true freshman starting in the middle.

Ol Piss resents that remark.
+230yds and 4tds is hardly servicable.

That's the kind of offense that gives Chavis fits.

Week 1 will certainly be a good test. If we hold Oregon to 250 yards or less on the ground, I will consider that an amazing feat.

No, LB play and DT play will be weaker
Posted on 8/4/11 at 6:52 am to Hired Gun
Our run D seems to me to be the only weak spot on the team. Special teams to a lesser extent.

I agree with this.
Hopefully they will be better at stopping the run game. The linebackers will be huge in this area. Aggressive defense tends to blow by plays sometimes and then leads to larger gains, so we need to watch out for those things and it will be better.

Defensive tackle will be the key position this season imho. A good push up the middle can destroy a running game and alter the passing game.

Yeah, one who can blow up the middle of an offensive line just as well as Drake Nevis did last year.
Mike Detillier didn't call Anthony Johnson the best defensive tackle he'd ever seen at this stage for nothing.
I'm fully confident in our defensive tackles blowing up run plays. Middle linebacker is the one that we have to wait and see about.

I hope so.. arky fourth qrt was not good.

Auburn gained 440 yards rushing, 8.5 ypc
Ole Miss gained 236 yards rushing, 5.6 ypc
Arkansas gained only 144, 3.1 ypc.
Arkansas killed us through the air.
And really, outside of Masoli and Newton, two running QBs, LSU's rush D wasn't that bad.
Interesting stats:
Alabama rushing vs LSU; 31 for 102 yards
McNeese rushing vs LSU; 34 for 101 yards

I still cant believe our D was touted as so good yet it gave up the single largest rushing total in the history of LSU football.
We must force penetration in the backfield. Chavis is going to have to gameplan and play close attention to the national championship game. Although we dont have a player as dominant as Fairly.
