Unfortunately for Miles, he has to live up to a standard now that NO OTHER COACH IN THE COUNTRY has to:
Beat the "genius" Nick Saban twice in a season.
Until then, he's a Tier 2 Coach in a Tier 2 Program.

And before anybody jumps on me for a homer pick because of my Mich St logo, note that I am not from Michigan St area or anything. I've grown up in Baton Rouge and LSU is my favorite team. I like Michigan State solely because I think they have a great coach. So there was no bias in picking Dantonio.

Depends on the fans. Some like my dad want saban and nothing else and unless he wins two nattys in a row, will never support him.

The truth of the matter is, not as long as Nick Saban is coaching college football.
It sucks for Les, because I think he is a great coach and face for LSU.

So, you obviously think Dantonio would be better at LSU than Miles is right?

the LSU has all the resources is the reason for his success is just BS. How many coaches have been thru here and didn't do jack?
If Miles had come here after Dinardo, I believe he would have us as a top tier program.

People take for granted that LSU is rare in that it is the only major football school in our state. A state that is loaded with talent.
As evidenced by all those other decades the club was winning 80% of their games?

Fair enough, it's a list, with some very good coaches, 4 of which also benefit from your criteria of 'advantage'. Brian Kelly, Franklin and Gundy, not quite sure what they have actually done to warrant entry.

Well, yeah. He has built Michigan State into a top 15 football program despite his recruiting classes(47,17,30,31,41 ranking for the last 5 years) being very modest presumably because of Michigan. If he could get LSU's talent, I absolutely think he would do better.
The last Michigan St coach to come here hadn't done near as well as Dantonio at MSU and he turned out alright.
Posted on 9/26/12 at 12:39 pm to stephendomalley
His contract and salary are the only bits of credit that he needs. He wins but he gets paid a lot to do so.

He got his arse whipped by ND this year so far. He'll likely take one on the chin this weekend against OSU. He won't be a top 15 team for long.

So you put Dantonio on the same level as Lil Nicky?

Les is a very good coach. Like every other coach in America:
a) He has some skeletons in his closet
b) He will be evaluated on not only what he has accomplished (pretty impressive) but also on what within reason he could have accomplished (most think he could have achieved more).
Moreover, the perception of Les is that he doesn't tend to detail and doesn't employ all his resources. Some examples:
a) Trying to call TO during a change of possession (vs AZ St or UTenn in '05).
b) Blowing a 21 pt half-time lead in TS vs UTenn in '05.
c) Constraining JaMarcus/Bowe/Early/Buster 'til mid-season in '06.
d) The '08 Malleveto debacle (very legit)
e) The OM and PSU clock issues in '09 (both blown way out of proportion IMO)
f) The UTenn finish in '10 (IMO this was mostly due to Crowton trying to get too fancy - I know Les was letting him).
g) The whole '11 season finish.
These, whether fair or not, are the things through which Les is viewed. IOW, every season, Les should have won a game or two more than he did (in hindsight, I would agree).
Now, for comparison, let's look at the one who is usually regarded as the best and there may be more, I just don't follow Bama as close as us):
a) Lost to ULM in '07 and also got Croomed.
b) Got blown-out by Utah in '08
c) Blew a 24 pt lead vs AU at BDS in '10
d) Now think about this, if Bama was so superior to us on 1/9, how did they ever loose to us on 11/5 at BDS (for which they had two weeks to prepare and I don't recall us doing anything new in that game)? Basically, Saban (presumably) with far superior coaches and players jeopardized Bama's chances to win a NC and only by some unprecedented fortune were they given a mulligan.

Well said... It's really sad that the majority of our fanbase still deep down doesn't care for miles..... And that is proven after the smallest of screw ups... They come out of the woods pointing the finger...

UAB and Iowa, while here, come to mind also.

Two part answer to your question:
1. He will never be considered as a great coach as long as he stays with LSU. "He wins with talent", "Talent rich state", "LSU recruits itself", blah blah will always prevail.
2. God forbid, if he does leave LSU, I bet it will be to one of the other top 8 programs above LSU (Michigan prolly) and he will recruit well there as well and will be very successful. See #1 and replace LSU with Michigan or wherever he goes.
Personally, I wish he retires here with more wins than anybody living at that time. Who cares if he is considered a great coach?! He has a mind of his own. He will have the last laugh and will eat his grass away happily ever after!

Some of us have questioned and wondered about some of the things he has said or done (or NOT done), but at the end of the day, Miles is good and LSU is lucky to have a guy like him IMHO.
no. he doesn't fit what people think is a great coach. He allows too much Les to show up, media types get scared at that kinda thing
