Why the hell does LSU have so many early defectors?

I don't know the actual numbers or facts but it sure seems like LSU has more players leave early that aren't sure fire top first rounders that leave early. On many you can understand their personal situations but in the recent past we have had many leave that probably could've increased their stock or you can say we haven't gotten lucky and had a "mosely" or "barrow" stay.

eta: Real talk though, I can't blame them. Go from the ~17K they get to pocket as a student to more than 15x that no matter how bad they are. Why not leave?

I think it has a lot to do with these kid's backgrounds.. Poor upbringing etc.

What players left that shouldn't have over the last 3-5 years?

If you need money, you roll the dice regardless of the round projected or being a free agent.

you make it sound like the sky is falling.

Part of it is our depth. We recruit well enough that they can leave and someone else steps up and fills in or even does better, ala Claibourne stepping up last year, and Minter stepping up this year without that dynamic playmaker we've had as defensive backs.
So yea we'll lose some guys to the draft, but someone else will step up and fill their shoes

Rueben Randle for starters

Glenn Dorsey stayed.
Tyson Jackson?
Brandon Lafell stayed.
LSU has been on a big stage the last 9 seasons. Players try to capitalize on that, same as we all would.

Offensive players may leave early due to no upside.

We have the best players.

Meh. He'd still be outside of the 1st even if he came back and put up a 1,000 yd season. LSU suffered more from him leaving early than he did.

Could Randle have stayed sure, but you really could say that for anyone unless they are projected in the top 5. The reality is Randle is doing well in the NFL this year so, you could make the argument he did the right thing because he is getting a lot of playing time and making an impact.
It does suck when the studs leave early, but look at Bama's defense last year it is just part of the program if the kids get a chance to take their trade to the NFL and make a living that is what they are going to do. Look at poor Marcus Latimore. You can make arguments both ways, but the reality is it would be nice for these guys to think of their education along with their athletic's but the lure of the cash and the risk of getting hurt have to way into the equation.

It's working out OK for Ridley. What was he? A 3rd round pick. Now in his 2nd season he's a 1,000 yard back on a Super Bowl contender.

It's obvious that you don't...

Pretty sure Sam Montgomery stuck around for an extra year.

No way you can say that for sure.
There was a very good chance that he could have pushed himself up in the draft with a big season.
