Why not start Latz against Utah Valley?

Latz has shown great stuff, arguably better than Poché. Latz will only go two or three innings anyway, so the rain won't spoil any innings.

You can make the argument that he's inexperienced, but he's a D1 pitcher. He has pitched big games before. He has to pitch his first postseason game sometime. What better time than now?

Agreed. You can save Poche for next game and should be able to pull off a win with Latz

I still don't think Mainieri wants to go more than a couple of innings with Latz.

It will be bulldog on bulldog. Poche' against their 255 lb. 6'5" guy. It might be a rough day for us at the plate.

I stopped here. While his stuff may end up being better, Latz has pitched, what, 4 innings this year?

Relax. Poche going today means he may go next Friday and keeps a better schedule. Also, it's the fact if the team wins the first two games, they will almost always win. They are the two most important. You don't just guess on weather.

No way!!! As good as Latz might be, he has no experience in this environment. Latz will do well as an 'ACE' reliever if you will. Until he gets some real pressured experience, you should never start a talented pitcher until they are ready. That would be a GREAT way to ruin a kids confidence if he had a bad outing.

Just sayin.......

Because then you would be wasting your only lefty out of the pen in the first 2 innings of game 1.

I'm in the start Latz camp, but for a different reason. Say you start Latz and you expect him to go 3 innings. Rain comes, he's done, such is life. Now say you start Jared and want him to go 7; rain comes in the 3rd, he's done for the weekend.

Someone get this to the locker room bulletin board... Stat!

He's gonna get shelled and fold under the pressure from the box.

Nothing in that quote is bulletin board material.. And if we need that type of motivation, then we are the ones in trouble..

See I don't think he would be done. Poche has been here before and if we get delayed here in the early innings (likely) , we could possibly bring him back in game 3, depending on how much he throws today...

If the offense was more consistent, I would be inclined to agree. However, it is more important to make sure we stay in the winner bracket.

Besides, if you only get 3-4 innings out of Poche because of the rain, there is a chance he'll be available in relief for the championship game & you would still have Latz available to pitch those 2-3 innings after the delay.
