re: Why is Jerry Stoval so forgotten as an All-time LSU great?

That 1982 game was Bama's first home SEC loss since they had lost to LSU in 1970.

As a little kid I remember thinking his name was snowball...duh

A 2007 fail on LSU's part. Maybe 2017?

Baton Rouge preps produced some great crops back then. Al Roy was a fitness genius.

No doubt. That '07 Florida game would have been even sweeter. Although I'm not sure Tiger Stadium could have handled that much awesome.

He was well respected as a player. He had wanted to become the LSU HC, but he had been passed over. Oddly, when Bo Rein died in the plane crash, Dietzal indicated that he needed a new coach fast. He initially considered doing it himself, but decided that he might be too old. Instead, he called Stovall into his office on a Saturday morning and offered him the job - with one hitch -keep Rein's assistants for the season. That was the landmine. I think that if he had been able to get his own crew, along with some decent recruiting, he proabably would have been ok. Arnsparger won off of Stovall's talent.

He also red shirted a lot of players his last year coaching that could have probably saved his job. He did not "suck" as a head coach. I would even go as far to say that he is/was better than what we have now.

What have you done for me lately?

Its not just Stovall. LSU fans are usually very weak when it comes to school history. I would bet a large majority posting here would be clueless at the name Johnny Robinson and yet he's an LSU All-American, multiple All-Pro and the first Tiger with a national championship and a super bowl ring. Believe he's in a couple of Halls of Fame as well. To many LSU fans Eric Martin is an old timer.

True. Awareness is lost.

<------guilty
And I don't like that. I guess growing up not in Baton Rouge, I wasn't privy to all the first-hand accounts passed down from people who actually saw him play.

He was from the era that I first started watching. Early-mid 80s. I'd say a lot of people don't know who Micheal Brooks is/was either. What can we do to remedy this or is that just how it goes?

Probably not a great deal that can be done. Your thread on Stovall is an excellent way of bringing his accomplishments to light on the rant for those who may not be aware or only know him as a coach. Good job.

An LSU History Board?????????
I've always thought that Jerry JUST missed on two occasions. He was robbed of the Heisman, I think because he was too close to Cannon's award. He had a potential 100 yd K.O. return against Ga Tech(big game at the time), when the last man to have a chance got a lucky poke at the ball as Jerry was running past him, and Jerry fumbled at the 50 yd line. That would have made it a done deal for the Heisman.
The next "miss" was his coaching tenure. He was getting the La players to stay at home and was reshirting for depth when he had a bad season. Had he weathered that season, I feel that he would have had long term success.
Congrats Jerry, you deserve this honor, as well as the admiration of LSU fans of all ages.

Great coach? Seriously? Dude was NOT a good coach, and nowhere near the coach Arnsbarger was. I know first hand.
He was an assistant after his playing days, and then HC at LSU under the circumstances described in this thread. Where did he go from there? Another D-1 school? D-1AA school? An assistant at a major program? No, he was a V.P. for Hibernia Bank.
From there, he was an AD somewhere in LA, but that was based upon business acumen and sports knowledge, not because he was a great coach/sports mind.
His overall record at LSU was 22-21-2 and including 2 losing seasons out of 4. We had a great team in 82........as we did in 83 and 83 was a further indication of how bad of a coach he was.......and further indicated by Arnsbarger's success 84-86 and even Archer's success in 87.
The two best coaches at LSU were Saban and Arnsbarger. No question, hands down,no one else even close.
The two best recruiters at LSU have been Saban and a toss between Stovall and Miles, but Miles had an easier job than Stovall because of the all that Saban did from top to bottom (facilities, TAF donations, stadium, academic center, plus a NC after 45 years and a national powerhouse, as well as high profile and very good PR), but in some ways back when Stovall was here you pretty much just had to keep your in-state guys and without internet, 30 different sports TV stations/cable TV there wasn't as much pressure from out of state programs for in state talent.
From there, probably Mac or Dinardo were the best coaches, and one could argue Archer. Afterall, he had a better one year record than anyone in that group other than Saban. Then Leslie, then Stovall, then Hallman.
You could've plugged Arnsbarger, Archer, Mac, Dinardo into the exact same situation as Miles (assistants, players, program, facilities, etc) and they all could've easily gone 10-2 and I'd be willing to bet there would've been one more NC and at least one 0 loss or 1 loss season, if not 2 or more.

To many, he should have won the Heisman that year over Terry Baker of Oregon State.
Indeed. And relative to his era, still remains one of the best athletes to every play at LSU. One of the best ever to play at LSU. Hell, anywhere.

Stovall got chickenshitted by Broadhead and the yellow BOS who wouldn't stand up for him. You don't treat your own like that. He was a great player, a good coach, and a better person.

Hands down?
Arnsbarger was a good coach for 3 years, but he never had a team which ended the season ranked higher than #10 and he was 0-3 in bowl games.
Good coach at LSU, but one of the best 2 ever here is a tad over the top. imo

Johnny Robinson was never an All American at LSU...
He should have been, but in those days it was an eleven man team picked mostly because of their offensive abilities.
If there would have been 11 on offense and 11 on defense picked he would have very likely been an All American.

Arnsbarger didn't inherit a championsip caliber team. Different era, different expectations. It brought some glory to TS.

Who said he did?
Jerry and LSU were playing in the Orange Bowl on 1/1/83. It's not like a year later there was no talent on the team.

You think? There was a good reason the AD at the time was called "bottom line Bob".
