Why don't college teams have a pre-season?

The thread about getting Collins and Dutton some work brought back a thought I've had for a while.
Why don't we have a preseason in college (outside of basketball exhibitions)?
For example, why not have 4-5 preseason baseball games, a mini spring training if you will.
It could even be something as simple as a bunch of 6 team tournament sites where you play 4 or 5 games in 4 or 5 days and none of them count. Have them all in the south so the northern teams can play. Use that time to get your guys some playing time against other uniform colors. Play your starters 2-3 innings each day and then let your backups play.
People used to say the pre-conference schedule was the "preseason" but not only do those games count, but more and more the fans want to see them play actual real competition in pre-conference.

What the fans want doesn't matter. The good teams will continue to use nonconference as pre-season.
The NCAA did start allowing fall games

I'm blowing my arm out just thinking of this...non conference games are pre-season games.

They do. There are scrimmages that happen each week for a month before the season.
Also, your example of playing 4 or 5 games in 4 or 5 days, wouldn't really help our situation that much. Those pitchers would get 1-2 appearances max.

Guys get hurt in practice as well. It happens.

Not when you are playing other top 25 teams which seems to be the norm more and more.
Also, the games count. Teams are not going to just pitch or play anyone and take a chance they could lose.

Basketball has a pre-season.

It is likely seen as a competitive disadvantage for smaller revenue schools. For example, schools in the SEC could (and would) pay the expenses that would come along with a preseason game. But if you are a school like Cen. Connecticut or Western Michigan, spending money to fly/bus your team somewhere for a preseason game is a significant expense. Particularly in baseball where the northern schools can't really play one another in Jan/February.
Now, I'm sure LSU, Texas, etc would pay the expenses for such schools to come down here similar to "buy" games in football and basketball. But that would still leave the northern teams left to the whims of the southern/southwest team. And frankly, for 98% of college baseball programs (almost all of whom don't turn a profit)_preseason games are an expense they AD doesn't see as necessary.

Cup cake games prior to conference are pre-season.

They definitely missed on an opportunity to warm up with Duquesne

Would rather scrimmage vs oursevles for 6 months which is what we currently do.

It’s baseball every game you schedule you could potentially lose.

It’s college, not professional sports. At least, that’s what they say. Seasons are too long already.
