Why does Mondo Duplantis compete as a Swede?

I get his mom is Swedish, but the kid was born and raised in Lafayette. Anyone know why he competed for Sweden when he was younger and if he will be a turn coat and compete for that euro trash instead of the Red, White, and Blue?

There was a thread on this. Apparently their qualifications are easier and he has already qualified so it allows him to compete in college and not have to go through the US trials.

USA qualifying rules are ridiculous.
Remember several years ago when the top decathlete in the world did not make it out of the US Trials and wasn't in the Olympics. It was ridiculous. It cost the US a medal.
Mondo could risk not qualifying at US trials when he already has a spot with the Swedish team.

As an LSU fan you should like this. He can solely focus on being a track and field athlete LSU because he is already qualified to compete in the next Olympics.
