They didn’t win an NCAA Tournament game from 1985 until 2018. They may have some history, but they are no blue blood by any stretch of the imagination, especially with no championships.

Sampson single-handedly revived their program. Again, kudos to them for hiring him when no one else with a pulse at the time would. It was a great move.

They have more students than LSU. In 2022 Houston had roughly 46,000 and LSU had 37,000.

That’s a little more to the UH story, left out of the Big 12 really hurt their AD financial in 90s and early 2000. Some big donors namely Tillman stepped in and around that time you had a guy as an assistant with the Rockets that had tremendous success in college but due to repeated NCAA violations had a 5 year show cause that was just ending. Perfect timing for all involved. As a side note I wonder do OU or IU fans still piss and moan about their administration firing Sampson
