I would say the majority of players don't wear anything unless they have an issue that equipment is designed to prevent. I never wore a neck roll until I had a neck injury and then I wore it until I stopped playing.

It keeps your head from going to far back and them whipping back. The most damage comes from the whipping back, so if you can eliminate the backward motion, then it's effective.

Why don't they wear there jerseys to class on Friday? Why don't our linebackers have visors and 10 sweatbands on each arm with cool eyeblack stkckers and there ankles taped over there shoes with 8 rolls of tape. Those were cool when I played.
