Why do defenders in college seem to force ball handler to the baseline? In high school we were taught to force the ball towards the middle, towards the help?
I noticed this a few times during LSU -Tenn.
at times, both teams just gave ball handler the baseline.

Baseline acts as another defender, and obviously you can’t go out of bounds so it’s a kind of wall as well. I was always tought to force baseline.

And to add to that, it’s a pretty common philosophy debate about forcing middle or forcing baseline. I would say force baseline is more popular, but there’s also coaches out there who teach forcing middle.

Who taught you this! They were wrong.

Especially along the baseline when the shot is at diffucult angle.

Well sorry to inform you that you were taught wrong. You make a guy go baseline every time. Then your “help” comes over and trap him. Then it’s basically a 3 on 1 with the out of bounds line.

The baseline acts as another defender a lot like the sideline does for a CB in football. Also, that forces the ball behind the backboard and gives the player an awkward angle for a shot.

In a 1-2-2 defense , coaches taught to funnel towards the middle, towards help. This was 4A high school basketball.
