Why do amateur teams drug test?

I'm no hippie, but if you really think about it, as long as it doesn't affect your play/practice, why do coaches/teams GAF if you blow some sticky-icky-icky on the weekends?
I mean, they have the leverage to suspend them or sit them if they show up to practice and are suspected to be high (just like if they showed up drunk), so what is the purpose of punishing kids like Ware, Mathieu, & Simon if they just shared a jernt to celebrate the Tennessee win while playin Madden 2011 on Sunday night?
If your answer is "they're on scholarship, so the university should have access to and control over their lives", then please explain why we don't drug test kids on academic scholarship? Seems to me the scholarship money is much more at risk with a kid who's getting it b/c of his/her brain rather than their braun.

They drug test for performance enhancing drugs. Everything else they find is a byproduct.

You shouldn't compare academic scholarships to athletic scholarships.

Because the drug discovered (if this is about drugs) is illegal in the state of Louisiana (if it's pot or fake pot.) If it was a prescription drug and they didn't have a script for it, again...illegal to use it. Thus, they would be participating in illegal activities. That's where the issue is with this whole thing....or so it would seem.

They did something else to warrant special attention to themselves. Maybe they didn't get caught for it by anyone else, but it is an "internal issue." Fill in the blanks

I don't think this is true. These tests look for very specific substances. For instance, to test for malaria, you must have a very specific test just to distinguish it from another type of malaria. They were purposely testing for pot/synthetic pot albiet through the same urine sample, just not the same test.

I don't understand why LSU would test internally when the NCAA has a testing program in place.

Neither is alcohol but the coaches have a say in when they don't want a student imbibing it.
Food is definitely not there but there are strict dietary regimens in place for the players.
This could have just been a commitment between particular players and the team/coach.
We still don't know what happened and why they were punished - time to just let it go.

In 2011 u think flushing a drug test down the toilet would be one of the top 10 things a major football program wouldn't do to keep there players in the game?
Let's not be naive and pretend like LSU, Auburn Florida Bama USC OU etc aren't doing shady things to get them to their schools and keep them eligible.
Testing for weed seems like something they would avoid if possible.

Unless something changed recently, this is false. They test for pot and other illegal drugs. They do NOT test for PEDs. I played and coached and was always under the understanding that the NCAA and/or the schools didnt test for PEDs because it was too expensive

Regular pot smoking can definitely have an effect on sleeping patterns, memory, motivation, etc., all of which can hurt on-field performance. Also, the team does have an interest in preventing drug abuse/addiction, which can hurt on-field performance.
But it is difficult to draw the line between a recreation and a habit and an addiction, and especially difficult to try to explain why you drew that line where. Therefore, it's easier (and safer) to just prohibit it altogether.

A coach doesn't want his team smoking weed. You don't want drugs any where near your program, things can quickly snowball into terrible situations. By drug testing the temptation should be removed becuase they know they will get caught.

You people are really reaching now. Plain and simple, its illegal and it is a violation written into the student athlete handbook, end of story.

I just find it interesting that the boss (Miles) would test his best performing "employees"
(Badger...Ware) when the company (NCAA) has a testing program in place.
